In A Music Slump...

I find myself repeatedly listening to albums that I'm comfortable with and know well. I find it hard to discover new music. I grew up with bands like Matthew Good, Our Lady Peace, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin and The Smashing Pumpkins. These Music choices date me as a 90's kid.

I'm hoping for some great music recommendations. That being said, music has always been a huge part of my life and this recent slump is pretty depressing.

So I turn to the Reddit masses... What should I listen to?

Check out a band called Hippo Campus! 4 of the guys also have side projects which are equally as good:

Brotherkenzie, Lupin, Baby Boys, Mono Moon, and Whistler Isaiah

Edit: I realize I said 4 of the guys have side projects and named 5 bands. That band consists of Lupin (Jake Luppen) and Brotherkenzie (Nathan Stocker)

Thanks for the recommendations. I couldn't really connect with Tame Impala and Still Woozy. I enjoyed listening to crumb and The Strokes are a band I was already pretty familiar with. The jewel of this list was Caamp. I'll be following up with them for sure.

Anytime i recommend music to anyone i mention sturgill simpson. Hes all around good vibes and easy to listen to. Good lyrics, and well thought out instrumentals. Never heard anyone say they didnt enjoy his stuff

Try a few different genres out. Spend 30 min researching some of the best stuff from that genre and listen to the entire album. If you like it , dig deeper.

Have you tried out Joy Division or Lana Del Rey or early Three 6 Mafia? Cerrone? Dead Moon? Chrome? All of these artists have a ton of brilliant shit and are all quite different Happy Sampling. 😎🤘

I would recommend Porcupine Tree to any fan of Radiohead. Their most well received albums are In Absentia, Deadwing, Fear of A Blank Planet, and Lightbulb Sun. I'd listen to them in that order

Thanks for going in with an open mind! Like most of us, I love finding new music and new bands, but I always find it extra amazing to discover one through a random internet stranger. Happenstance. Right place right time.

And for what it's worth, I'm in my mid 40s but I saw flor play live right before COVID shut everything down, so like 3 years ago or so, and and they are really good live. The vocalist sounds just as good live as he does in videos or in studio. Good energy too.

Nice to see VAST on a reddit recommendation list for once. Jon Crosby was such a boss vocalist back in the day (don't know if they are still active/touring). I think "I Don't Have Anything" is one of the most humbling and heart wrenching songs I'll ever know.

Philadephonic is great, Coast to Coast/Yeah, It’s That Easy/Electric Mile are all solid. Newer albums after that IMO are less good but still worth a listen.

Edit: except Fixin to Die. It’s essentially a bluegrass/country album and that’s not my genre but I happen to love G. Love’s spin on it.

I love thinking about being a fan of theirs compared with fans of so many other artists who are starving. Gizz fans are constantly feasting, and you’re so right about the consistency of their incredible output. Their styles are all over the map but whatever they do, it’s compelling. Gizztober was one of the most fun months I’ve had since March 2020

This isn't going off of your list of past listens, just newer artists I've been into. So take it with a grain of salt I guess lol. Black Country New Road Jockstrap Viagra Boys Model Actriz Soul Glo Kernfusion Slowthai Dispirited Spirits Geese Hot Mulligan Squid Idles The Callous Daoboys Weatherday Parannoul And there are so so so many more. The music is out there, no matter which genre you're into. You just have to look!

Oh man, I’m still playing catch up. I’ve barely listened to KG or LW, Omnium Gatherum or Changes.

Last LP I picked up was Butterfly 3000 and I love that shit. Hard to believe it’s from the same band that also released Infest The Rats Nest or Polygondwanaland.

I’m a metalhead at heart so I hope they revisit the Rats Nest sound again!

Then you’re in for a treat because I’m fairly certain that one of the two new albums they are prepping is going to have more a metal sound. I also love Rat’s Nest and would love another album like that. The fact that Rat’s Nest and Butterfly 3000 are only separated by two albums is insane to me

I've actually loved Ben Howard since I first heard him on Watch, Listen, Tell. Damien Rice was a pretty constant listen for me back in high school. Bat For Lashes was new to me. I listened to a handful of songs and enjoyed a couple of them. Thank You.

Great! Me too. Next favourite albums of theirs are Separation Sunday and Almost Killed Me (actually that’s their three earliest albums now). Story is the lead guy was in a post-punk kinda band and listened to The Band and thought “why don’t people just play straight ahead good rock n roll anymore?” And started this band… so good

Always hard when you don't tell much about yourself.

An all-purposes recommendation, King Gizzard And The Lizard Wizard, as the band changes a lot their style from an album to another. It's got an intimate touch, delicately playing on the interactions between multiple guitars, one bass, one bass, one drums, and various instruments.

Always start with their "The dripping tap" song, and then, probably, from another album, "Magma" is a good sequel. "Magma" is long, 9 minutes, you can take time to enjoy each movement, it's kind of more the travel than the destination song...

Otherwise, may I throw a weirder suggestion? Try to find songs whose beat speed match your max speed typing speed. I find it's the ones I naturally, spontaneously, click the best with. Depending on you, you'll find yourself naturally matching with disco, death metal, who knows what lol.

Start with Omnium Gatherum to get an idea of their eclecticness.

Maybe you should try King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard. They've got a hell lot of albums, with very diverse genres (from psychedelic garage rock to jazz fusion or metal), and they're very good on their instruments.

Sometimes I also go back, and for months I listen to the same music that I loved when I was a teenager in the 2000s (White Stripes, Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Doors, Strokes, Arctic Monkeys, etc), and I worry that I'll never ever gonna discover new things, and it means that I'm old now. But fortunately once or twice a year I always find something interesting.

Either way, sounds like we're about the same age and I found myself in a music slump a while back. Spotify actually helped me a lot. Opened an account and liked a few songs and let the algorithm start doing its thing. My Discover Weekly is always filled with a healthy combination of things I love, things I missed along the way (but love), things I forgot about, and new things.

The Warning and Turnstile are my favorite “new” artists—as in formed in the last 15 years. I would also check out Dorothy and Bad Omens. Spotify has many playlists for different genres, and it also recommends similar artists when you listen to a particular group. If you find a new band you like, buy some of their merch because Spotify pays almost nothing to artists.

I suggest searching for a list of music genres, types or whatever and maybe you'll find one you have never heard of or know nothing about and then look some up and give it a listen. You may not find something you like but you'll have fun discovering new and unusual sounds. And you never know! You can try this with music from other countries or other eras, too! (try looking up weird instruments and listening to songs that use them)

Idk if this will be your cup of tea but the band Ghost has been my favorite band I’ve found in 20 years and I grew up and still idolize 90s alt and rock. I think odds are you’ll find songs you like by them. They have some harder style of songs but they also have a lot of more poppyish songs too.

I’d suggest Mary on a Cross and Dance Macabre to dip your toes into it with. Hope you enjoy, I found them two months ago and will going to my first concert in over a decade thanks to them.

Whatever music you enjoy, no matter how "old" or "new" it is. Not continuously finding "new" music doesn't mean you're in a "slump". Asking internet strangers for music recommendations seems forced, not a natural way to find something you like. How did you discover you liked Radiohead and Smashing Pumpkins? My feeling is if there's music out there that you'd enjoy then you'd find it on your own eventually; no need to force things.

Have you heard a band called Failure? Their album "Fantastic Planet" is awesome from beginning to end. Definitely 90's grunge, and a criminally overlooked album.

I see them as a mix between Nirvana and A Perfect Circle. But like zero hit songs. They still hit really well though.

Thanks for the insight. Maybe using "slump" isn't the right word. When I think back to how I found Radiohead and Smashing pumpkins, it was a recommendation from somebody, lol. I don't see a problem with asking for help to make my music pool larger. I see the value in your comment, and trust me when I say, I'm never forced to listen to music. Whether that be good or bad.

If you want a small list of songs I really like I can totally give them to you, but I will say that “Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies” is my favorite album, so if you want to start somewhere that is a solid place!
