I made this because I really like listening to college radio—it's fun to listen to undergrad radio hosts and a lot of the stations play a really diverse and interesting mix of music. For now the app just has 10 radio stations for big public schools, but I could put new stations on really easily if there's a public streaming link. Let me know if you find this useful or if you have any feedback!

You just opened up a humourous memory for me.

In the early 90s I lived across the street from the University of California, Irvine campus. Their (somewhat legendary) radio station KUCI only had a 25 watt transmitter. Once you strayed, like, a mile beyond the campus you got nothing but static. One year they upgraded to a transmitter that pumped out a raging 200 watts. Suddenly, one could listen to Tazy's ska show all the way out into the orange groves past Westpark.

The promo they ran at the time went something like, KUCI. Now more powerful than most lightbulbs

College Radio stations are always the best radio stations for variety. Here is 88.7 KTCU’s link out of Fort Worth. In DFW we’re blessed to have four and a half really good options for non commercial radio.

As always, Fuck Iheart, Audacy, and Cumulus.

It wasn't particularly popular. There were only 1100 students, so the potential audience was tiny. A fellow DJ put on Debbie Gibson and announced that if anyone asked him to stop he would. And he did a four-hour shift of "I Think We're Alone Now."

The saddest part of that was that the station was also broadcast via speakers in the student union.

Viva collage radio! Please add KFJC! I stream them or listen on the radio, but they're great and should be added.

Can reserve the .fm domain and use that (redirect) ? You might have better luck with marketing and overall reach.

I listen to WMBR which is MIT's radio station. They used to be WTBS for its parent organization The Technology Broadcasting System, but in the early days of cable TV Ted Turner wanted those letters so he offered them a big chunk of money to let him have them and they put it all into transmission power so they went from a station you could only get near the campus to covering all of Boston/Cambridge and pretty well out to the suburbs.

The new letters are for Walker Memorial Basement Radio since that's where the station is housed in the Walker Memorial building on the campus.

The links are m3u or pls files for direct streaming to Winamp or other players. I just found that the latest Firefox was trying to save them. You have to save one, then in the Firefox download list, right click, and select "always open similar files". Then your associated player like VLC will open the stream link.

One can also review "application" in browser settings to see how file extensions are handled, and set the associated application.

Some are indeed no longer working, often because the site has gone to some non-stream-rippable in-browser player or app, perhaps for those with phones etc that are confused by advanced technology of the past, or so that they can serve up ads and tracking.

Once upon a time I lived in the Albany NY area and I used to love listening to 88.3 (the SAINT!!!) WVCR. They had a long running polka show followed by an equally long running Irish music show, and it was really fun to hear the hosts take requests from frequent callers and chat like they were old friends. Plus just all kinds of other stuff- for a while one student host was running an “anime music hour”, and at certain times at night the whole station (music, host, ads and all) switched over to Spanish and we got various Spanish pop. And once a week- I think it was Saturday nights?- they aired old radio dramas. It made my commute fun because I worked varied hours so there was always something different to listen to. And even though the station is owned and run by a Catholic college, it didn’t go too heavy on the Jesus music. I think I remember them airing religious programming early on Sunday, but nothing really beyond that. They didn’t even go to hard on the Christmas music around that time of year. I remember every other station in the area switched over to 24/7 Christmas music in like, October, but they stuck to their regular programming well into December, which I very much appreciated!

Me too. I remember hearing a ton of awesome new music while listening to it. I think the first time I heard Electric Six was on The Impact and saw them at the union a few months later.

There was a very eclectic station in the town of Berkeley called The Shirley and Spinoza. Show. This station has been around since the mid 90s and you will not find a more offbeat type of sound.

So you took this thing called radio.... And put it with this other thing called the internet?

Do the doors on your car go like * this * or like * this *?

Note: I have no issue with what you've done and I hope it serves a need. My brain just delivered tv show memories into my brain and I wanted to share

Yep, this is what I've been using! Thanks for linking—I'll try to put WRAS on the site when I add features later today. Sometimes there are security restrictions on the stream but I'll troubleshoot that when I get there.

KUCI reached my neighborhood in Santa Ana in the early 2000s and that’s how I discovered The Magnetic Fields. If I drove around too much I would lose the station, and I also couldn’t listen to it inside my house. Aww memories. 🥲

Thanks for doing this!

My alma mater’s station is WRUW-FM Cleveland, (like many others) on 91.1. I was on air for a few years in the 90s and helped get the initial streaming setup going.

https://wruw.org has all the goodies.
