Deftones is a great band. I like Diamond Eyes and Koi No Yokan, but Adrenaline and Around The Fur are definitely my favorite.

Since the band has left a bit of their anger to build more atmospheric grooves, I was thinking if there was any band(s) sounding like Deftones on their first two albums.

Soil, Ill Nino, Nonpoint, Nothingface, 40 Below Summer to name a few. Not 100% the same as Deftones but nothing really is. They all had grit back then though

yeah, I was gonna say, there's a reason their sound has persisted for 25 years and only grows in esteem. Korn and Deftones were progenitors of sounds that can only be copied because the sound is interwoven into the core of everything they do. Re: Pink Floyd, Yes, Prince, NiN etc.

I should tack-on that any major variations to their respective sounds has really only happened because of lineup changes within the bands.

Maybe try some of their big influences, stuff like Helmet, Jawbox, and Drives Like Jehu.

Deftones had (have) their own sound. I’ve seen some good early nu metal suggestions already. Best I can offer are metal bands I was listening to near the same time I was listening to these.

Tool - Undertow and Aenima
Marilyn Manson - Anti-Christ Superstar
Korn - Korn and Life is Peachy
Static-X - Wisconsin Death Trip
System of a Down - System of a Down
Pantera - Far Beyond Driven and The Great Southern Trendkill
Slipknot - Slipknot
Limp Bizkit - Three Dollar Bill, Y’all
Soulfly - Primitive
Coal Chamber - Coal Chamber and Chamber Music
Godsmack - Godsmack
Disturbed - The Sickness
Staind - Dysfunction
Machine Head - The Burning Red
The Union underground - An Education in Rebellion
Spineshank - The Height of Callousness
White Zombie - Astro-creep 2000
Full Devil Jacket - Full Devil Jacket
Drowning Pool - Sinner
Cold - 13 Ways to Bleed on Stage

Loathe is kind of in that direction, that being said Deftones were really in in their own lane. So most any of the nu metal from the time might scratch the itch some

Maybe check out this band Five Point 0. I'm not sure if I'd even call them a one hit wonder, but they had a track on the Resident Evil movie sound track in like 2002.

I heard a song recently that sounded a lot like Deftones: Moodring - SYNC.wav

Not sure what their other music sounds like
