I'm a Boomer. Prog is almost everything to me, but aside from some fantastic current guitarists (Joe Satriani, Buckethead, Joe Bonamassa, etc) and a few emotional singers (Fiona Apple, Sara Bareilles, Rachael Yamagata), I got nothing to listen to.

I know I'm turning into my parents, but practically nothing since more or less 1979 is the least bit interesting. What calls itself prog rock is mostly zombie music, dead except it doesn't know it.

To be fair, I got some leads, but they were all red herrings. I tried somebody called Tool, said to be similar to Zep, but more like Zep Warmed Over. I heard the Chainsmokers were something, but they were tedious, a one and done it seems. I got a fantastic review of Dry Cleaning, which turned out to be a poor man's mashup of the Cranberries and the Plasmatics and won't be remembered in 5 minutes.

Anybody got any solid leads? I'm not asking for the next Rolling Stones or Doors, just something passable and new.

Whoever told you Tool sounded like Led Zeppelin should be slapped. There's influence there but they don't really share sonic DNA. Go listen to Gretta Van Fleet if you want a subpar clone of Zep.

I think Prog Rock as you know and expect it is almost entirely dead. Unless you're willing to venture into the realm of Progressive Metal (Opeth, Dream Theater, Mastodon, Porcupine Tree & Steven Wilson, Tool, Neurosis) then there isn't much to offer at this point. I'd sooner recommend you start listening to 90s Death Metal.

In the realm of emotional singers, there's plenty to offer. Weyes Blood had a lush album in 2019 called Titanic Rising that has a lot of resonance with 70s singer/songwriters. Lianne La Havas' self-titled album from 2020 was very good. Laura Marling has put out many good albums, and the most recent two are among the best. See if those bare any fruit

Check out these bands, starting with the albums listed:

Porcupine Tree - Closure/Continuation (2022) (This is their first album in 12 years, a great returning statement by them.)

Steven Wilson - Hand. Cannot. Erase (2015) (Steven Wilson is the front man for Porcupine Tree, but his solo discography is also incredible.)

Haken - The Mountain (2013)

Leprous - Malina (2017)

Thank You Scientist - Terraformer (2019) (Some awesome fusions of jazz & funk in this band's music. Among all the bands listed here, Thank You Scientist are definitely the most fun & the most proggy.)

Vulkan - Mask of Air (2011)

Caligula's Horse - Bloom (2015)

Kyros - Celexa Dreams (2020)

Kingcrow - Eidos (2015)

Wobbler - Dwellers of the Deep (2020) (These guys are basically the lovechild of Yes & Jethro Tull. Their music really stands out though.)

I've been around the block a lot of times when it comes to finding top tier modern-day prog, and these bands/artists are definitely among the best.

Have you tried Dream Theater? They are prog metal and have been putting out albums for 30 years now.

How about Nightwish? They are symphonic metal but many of their songs could also be classified as prog rock given the time changes and stylistic changes within the song. This song I'll link an amazing live version that makes you think your at a classical music opera for the first 1:20 or so and then the metal kicks in. Over its 14 minutes it hits multiple genres. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=N4Vfy5yCy-c

There's a whole subgenre of Prog Metal, like Dream Theater, Trivium, Mastodon, etc...

But my favorite newish prog rock would be King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard's Polygondwanaland, Nonagon Infinity, and Murder of The Universe. (Their entire discography is so eclectic it'll give you plenty to listen to and not get bored)

Also Mars Volta's first album Deloused in the Crematorium is great as well as their new self titled album which is more mellow but amazing none the less.

It's great if you do end up finding some new music you enjoy, but it's also perfectly fine if you don't and just enjoy what you grew up with. It happens to most everybody as they get older.
