I want some traditional-ish ballads. Something a bard could sing in a tavern or something. Maybe and old text with reconstructed music from middle ages. "Soldier, poet, king" but with more story and less 'oh leigh, oh laigh, oh lows'. Shanties come pretty close to what I want. Any recommendations? Bands, artists, albums or singles all very appreciated.

Made a quick playlist. I didn't find anything EXACTLY like I wanted, but folk songs come close enough. I'll definitely add more since I didn't have much free time to do my digging. https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5gvEQqQP--9HO4XPVZ-XnNTsynK5_gby&feature=share

Try The Decemberists, tons of songs fit this description. Perhaps Picaresque is a good place to start.

My first recommendation is Canadian folk singer Stan Rogers. Below are some of his songs that I think fit what you are looking for, but if you like these I highly recommend checking out his entire catalogue:

Barrett's Privateers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3T0Ruhb734U

Harris and the Mare: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw2Me2pPQuY

Cliffs of Baccalieu: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FQ8wo2MFtS8

My second recommendation is the soundtrack to the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou - it is 100% great, old-timey music.
