Any genre! Contemporary music writing preferred.

I love to read good writers discussing music passionately and eloquently, and I love when music writing is insightful and makes me think about music in a new way or shows me a new perspective. Unfortunately, a lot of music writing out there either regurgitates labels' promotional material or simply lacks insight and provides nothing anyone couldn't provide for themselves by just listening to the music. So I put it to the people of /r/Music to suggest the best available music writers, the best articles about artists, albums, and songs, the best contemporary criticism and analysis, and the best music appreciation. Podcasts and youtubes are also acceptable, in a pinch.

Thats a hard question! Good though. To me "modest mouse- dashboard" has some really good lyrics they're fun and also makes a point . But theres music that someone finds deep meaning in and its completly obscure to others. Speaking on myself I'll love a song for its emotional effect on me, take "seafret- oceans" to me there are a few verses that really hit home but 5 years ago I'd never give it a chance it was only because of my mental state at the time that I heard it. So to me all music is good ( yes a few handful of exceptions) but in 10 years I may not like any of the songs I just listed. So no matter what answer you get it will be of that persons state at that moment in time speaking of "Buttercup - Jack Stauber" just came up and im loving it cause im drunk dont think id seek him out though. Its a tough a question! Good though.

If it’s production writing you’re after, check out ‘Mixing With Your Mind’. If you’re after a good music bio, check ‘Medical Grade Music’ by Steve Davis and Kavus Torabi

I definitely will. I know very little about mixing so I'd be excited to learn something about it and maybe listen to music a little differently as a result. Thanks!

Mark Fisher.

Basically any of his writing on music, "The Weird and The Eerie" is amazing although it also delves into movies/series.

If you're in the mood for digging his blog www.k-punk.org is a treasure trove.

The book "K-punk" is a collection of his writings published posthumously and it contains a lot of his writing on music.

How to Listen to Jazz by Ted Gioia is not only a great, short introduction to jazz but also a great book on music

This has been on my to-read list for too long. Time to bite into it. Thanks for the reminder!
