They're all sorta similar. Maybe as a project do a deep dive into some other genre ... jazz, hip hop, whatever, learn the classics, the current waves, etc.

The lead singer of gorillaz used to sing for Blur. Dave Mathews band is pretty similar to some of Coldplay's music.

VNV NATION -- "Gratitude"

https://youtu.be/CFeHyWxuPcI

.............................................

It is not love, if love is cold to touch.

It is not belief, when there's nothing there to trust.

Could not submit, would never bring myself to heel.

Determination grows, as each truth's revealed.

Torn and repaired, just to endure it all again.

Without a reason, for my place in all this pain.

Though well concealed, the scars, they just compound.

Until there's nothing left -- of what once was my former self.

My god, look at what we are now.

Without regret for all the things that we have done.

Thank you for all the doubts, and for all the questioning.

For all the loneliness and for all the suffering.

For all the emptiness, and the scars it left inside.

It inspired in me -- an impetus to fight.

For the conviction, for the purpose found along.

For the strength and courage, that in me I've never known.

And if it seems to you, that my words are undeserved.

I write this in gratitude -- for whatever good it serves.

Sometimes I wish, that you could see me now.

In the rightful place, where I knew that I belonged.

Sometimes I wish, that you might someday understand.

And close the chapter, and lay to rest the past.

But nothing would change, we make the best of what we have.

For we are measured by the actions of our lives.

We bide our time, let the future unfold.

Like immortals, in great legends to be told.

My god, look at what we are now.

Without regret for all the things that we have done.

Thank you for all the doubts, and for all the questioning.

For all the loneliness and for all the suffering.

For all the emptiness, and the scars it left inside.

It inspired in me -- an impetus to fight.

To all who stood with me, when we stood as one.

Thank you for guiding me, for bringing me home.

And if it seems that I'm obliged to say these words.

I write this in gratitude, the least that you deserve.

Try radiohead. My favorites are Karma police, paranoid android, 15 step, Ful stop and weird fishes. To me radiohead feels like a more depressed version of twentyonepilots. If you want something upbeat i would recommend instrumental math rock. It sounds unique because the genre consists of songs that use odd time signatures, which feel "alive", you can find plenty of playlists with it on youtube.

I mean OP has really shitty taste, maybe you can fix it?

Fluffy_Little_Fox t1_iueb44q wrote

I dunno -- my music taste is pretty all over the place, and my brain is constantly cycling from lyric to lyric.

I like Hip Hop, Japanese Metal, Video Game OSTs, some 70s and 80s music (Men At Work, Duran Duran, Kate Bush, Pat Benatar)...

Industrial (NIN, Manson, Mindless Self Indulgence)

Japanese Speedcore (DJ Sharpnel)

J-Pop (Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, Camui Gackt)

I think the only genre I'm not super fond of is Country Music, but despite my dislike of the genre I still enjoy some Reba McEntire songs.....

Oh hell yeah....

THE FEAR OF BEING ALONE....

I feel wierd liking this kind of stuff, this is like... My mother's style of music. But damn it just hits, ya know????

Radio / MTV is the McDonald's of Music. Oh wait, MTV doesn't even play Music anymore, just stupid Reality TV shows.

I don't ~hate~ Coldplay, they're ok. But I wonder if they are aware that their song "Speed of Sound" rips off a synth melody from the 1981 song "Mechanical" by a New Wave band called The Quarks.

https://youtu.be/4YbeyYn5SQA

You can't tell me that it don't sound like the same melody. Lol....

Bah-doop-booba-dah doop.

It's not uncommon for two songs to sound the same.

People say that "Robo's Theme" from Chrono Trigger sounds like "Never Gunna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, but I don't hear the similarity at all. It feels like kind of a stretch....

It could be worse, at least O.P. isn't a K-Pop fan, lol (Visual Kei / J-Rock kicks all those Korean Backstreet Boy Band's asses).

My ex was a huge Fleetwood Mac/Stevie Nicks fan. Whenever one of their songs comes on, I "nope" right out...except for one...

I crank up "Go Your Own Way" every time.

One other song that really helped was Don Henley - The Heart of the Matter I always liked the song, but I never really listened to the lyrics carefully. When I did - after we broke up - I finally 'got' the song.
