Every now and again I decide that I will try, and no matter what I do I just don’t find a connection. The only album I have found that I like is the s/t Run DMC album. I can’t even say why I like that album over others, but it’s just fun and positive and creative. It also helps that I can listen to it while driving my kids around. Are there other artists and albums that I could branch off into based off of that energy?

Started with “push it along” from people’s instinctive travels and it’s really perfect! Love the background depth of the music and the clarity of the rhymes. Will keep listening! Thanks!!

I consider Tribe to be the Beatles of hiphop. They didn’t make my favourite rap record (illmatic / 36 chambers) but the quality of records they have are top notch. Once you “get” them, it’s like hanging out with a couple of friends.

Tribe are a duo, Q-tip (the wise cool intellectual with the laid back high voice and silky smooth flow) and then Phife Dawg, (the short and feisty guy with a raspy voice). Such a perfect dichotomy.

The albums I’d focus on are:

Midnight marauders The low end theory Beats rhymes and life The love movement.

Anything before and after are ok but not them at their best IMO. ps I was a hardcore rock guy, HATED rap music before I found tribe, they completely changed my life in that regard because it was a gateway into the world of hiphop.

[Clear Soul Forces] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyIB9FnSlSM)

I'm sure you've probably given them a try since they're very similar & from the same time, but [Beastie Boys] (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TgTXYFHlfk)

Massive Attack….rap purists probably won’t consider trip hop but these guys have some great flow, good rhymes and unique delivery….incredible live band as well…not really positive energy though but worth a listen

You don't have to like everything. If it's not for you, then so be it.

If you like Run DMC and really want to keep trying to find something you like, look to other artists of the era. A good trick for finding similar music is using pandora and listening to the artist's radio, Run DMC Radio for this example. Down thumb anything you don't like. Don't ever thumbs up though. Thumbs up will have it playing the same songs relentlessly.

There are artists in every genre that I seem to like and and dislike. Most of the rap I have been made aware of has been stuff that I dislike, but because I know I like Run DMC I also know that there are other artists I would like as well.

Try Beastie Boys. Paul Revere is a great song by them. Really fun lyrics. You might also like some Sir-Mix-Alot, Cypress Hill, or Biz Markie. I'm guessing you're not a fan of the violent gangster rap style. Outkast may be a decent option for you that's a bit more recent.

You seem to like soul. Maybe more melodic rappers are you thing. Maybe gives song hell & back by bakar , sugar by brockhampton, peach Kevin abstract, cocoa butter kisses by chance the rapper and see if you like it more. My favourite rapper is Mick Jenkins definitely recommend “The Waters” by him. I’m also into guys like Isaiah Rashad, Kota the friend, 6lack. I’m sure you’ve tried the Kendricks and J Cole’s but maybe go check out their earlier work. Born sinner by J Cole has always been one of my favourite albums. I’ve never met someone who doesn’t like Run The Jewels. That’s like peak production and lyricism while still being fun af IMO. There’s so many different lanes in hiphop I feel like you’ll find your niche eventually if you keep an open mind

Broken bells, one of the people in broken bells is named danger mouse, he produces a lot of rap. He did an album with MF doom, it's called DangerDoom. I'd give that a try.
