Not a particularly helpful answer but start with some samba and bossa nova standards.

Both are Brazilian but still very popular in Portugal. I went to an awesome weekly samba jam in Lisbon a couple years back.

Jobim is always my favourite. He made a fantastic album with Herbie Mann sung in Portuguese.

You should definitely explore the genre "Fado" and a quintessential artists of that genre, Amalia Rodrigues and Carlos Do Carmo. Fado is often ballads about longing. It's quite beautiful. My grandfather exposed me to it as a child, I still love it. There are modern artists that still keep it alive today.

Amalia has a song called "fado Portugues" lol can't think of a more "on the nose" example than that.

There are (have been) some great Portuguese singer songwriters. A must-listen is José Afonso, especially Cantigas do Maio and his recordings of (Coimbra-style) Fado. Sergio Godinho, Vitorino, José Mario Branco are among my favorites as well. In the 1990s, Madredeus made a few lovely records. There’s a whole bunch of newer Lisbon-style Fado singers with various takes on the tradition (Marisa, Ana Moura, Carminho…) who may be worth exploring, but I haven’t listened to much of their music.

Most of the widely known Portuguese songs in western canon are gonna be of Brazilian origins... Mais Que Nada
