The local radio has started its annual holiday assault. The same 15-20 Christmas will be played, repeatedly, for the next 5 weeks.

What are some good, obscure, Christmas songs? My favorites are Dominick the Donkey by Lou Monte; Christmas in Hollis by Run DMC, and The Spirit of Christmas by Ray Charles.

Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses is a favorite. Also the Duke Ellington Nut Cracker suite is killer

Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis by Tom Waits. Although it’s not really a Christmas song I suppose, but it has “Christmas” in the title, so I count it.

12 Days of Christmas by Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. Each of the 12 days is performed in both a different key and a different time signature. For the time signatures, the number of beats per measure matches the number of the day of Christmas, ie, 11th day of Christmas = 11 beats per measure for that verse.

"Christmas," by Blues Traveler. The music is based, in part, on the song "Divided Sky" by Phish.

Fairytale of New York, the Pogues. Although it has some dated references to our gay friends.

You're welcome! I've never been a huge Blues Traveler fan, but I like them and I saw them live once. They put on a great show. I never knew about this Christmas song they did until one year when I was working at a radio station. One of the DJs put this song on the air and I was in the other room, working. I wasn't really paying much attention, and then all of a sudden I was like, "Wait a minute- that sounds like Divided Sky! What the heck is this?" Turns out it was released on a Christmas compilation album "A Very Special Christmas 3," which benefitted the Special Olympics.

One that I used to hear a lot on rock radio in the 80s but not anymore was Billy Squier, "Christmas is a Time to Say I Love You."

Abney Park has a Christmas album. Almost all transposed in minor, with a few originals. Makes for a very different Christmas vibe.
