Rockin’ around the Xmas tree by Brenda Lee in terms of Xmas feeling and John Lennon’s Happy Xmas for a better song in general, with a tad less Xmas feeling.

Father Christmas by the Kinks is the best song. Its not the best Christmas song but its the one I'd listen to given the choice.

Best Christmas Song is Sleigh Ride by the Ronettes

I think Just Like Christmas by Low is untouchable.

It’s a holly jolly banger, totally appropriate for a wintery festivities. But the emotion of the song runs deep— if you care to engage with the message, it‘ll absolutely make your heart grow three sizes.

The Goo Goo Dolls put out a Christmas song a few years ago that wasn’t terrible.

One I’d not heard for ages until last year; Another Rock ‘n’ Roll Christmas.

Thought process: What’s this, sounds familiar? Oh yeah, great! Hum along a bit whilst the rest of the brain is wracked for the artist and…

Still not sure how WH Smith missed its provenance.

Edit; and NOT that turgid Lennon nonsense. Maybe a bit harsh and the ends certainly aren’t justified by the means, but Mr Chapman did Lennon’s reputation quite a favour.

What do you mean by “turgid Lennon nonsense”? And he was quite famous before he got shot 5 times in his back in front of his wife, wasn’t he?

Absolutely! His solo stuff just kept getting worse though. By having an…enforced career break…the memory remains of his as the early Beatle and not the later versions (cf Van Morrison, Morrisey, Eric Clapton etc).

Ok, and do you mean his message in Happy Xmas is nonsense or do you think the song itself is nonsense?

Actually, I’m being a miserable curmudgeon. It was a lighthearted merry question and my personal dislike is souring the conversation.

Christmas is all about the songs that make us feel good, so who am I to pour scorn on your choice.

Hope you have mince pies & sherry and enjoy the festive season.

(Actual answer: Nat King Cole ;-) ).
