37 and still find songs I love on a regular basis

When this happens, I usually take it as an opportunity to start backtracking and finding music from the past I may have missed. There was most likely something twenty years ago that you never heard when you were a kid but that would fit you to a tee today.

This usually has the advantage of opening up more, and more recent doors. You find something old you like, and then you learn that it was written by a guy in this other band you never heard of, and that he’s on this cool label you didn’t know about that has a ton of great artists. Suddenly you’re up to your ears in new music again!

Yeah I found some songs that I digged, new releases but also very older songs. But nothing that really made a deep impression.

46 and finding songs. I think I'm pickier, so I like fewer, but there are always a few a year I love and will continue to love.

Maybe you need to branch out in your music genres? If the type of music you've been listening to just doesn't do it for you now maybe something totally different will!

I'm very picky, only Chopin and the Beatles have more than 10 songs that I like. Maybe Amy wine house too. Other songs I love;

I do, and i do discover songs that I like, from rachmainoff to techno. But I just don't completely fall in love anymore

When depression or burnout hit, then sure, but for seemingly most people, nope.

Also don't rely on the radio to meet your needs. Most stations just play the same granny safe stuff over and over, even ignoring newer singles from popular artists.

Just have to keep searching. I have to put more effort into it. It doesn’t happen as often, but I’m still finding songs I play repeatedly. Latest songs are “Sports” and “Ain’t No Thief” by Viagra Boys. Before that was “Never Fight A Man With A Perm” by IDLES. I love both the bands now. I’m 44.

45 here and I've never been one to fall in love with songs. I'm more into albums as a whole. If a song catches my attention I'll give the album and sometimes the artists whole discography a listen. Every once in a while j still find new music I'll enjoy for a long time. It's definitely less frequent the older I get though.

I'm absolutely extremely picky with music, so much that I don't go to concerts because dislike the majority of the songs

Age 63. Thru age 40 it was no problem i found new music constantly. Then in the 2000s and 2010s, less and less and less. Past 5 years almost nothing. But last winter i discovered Lord Huron.

Funny, I never have listened once to an album since Spotify.

I feel like Spotify isn't helping. The list recommendation algorithm is always coming up with same suggestions.

Had a good alternative station in my city back then, also just browsing in used CD stores. Also my wife is younger, got me into metal and other weird stuff like Clutch.

You are not even interested in listening to albums so how do you even find songs? based on popularity?

I find them by playlists and recommendations. I was just as picky in music 5 years ago, but still discovered songs that would completely wow me at first listen. Whether I'm picky or not doesn't answer whether it's common that people stop having a strong response to new music after a certain age. If I'd ask my parents to list there top 10 songs, i don't think it will contain anything after their 30th. Maybe 1 exception .

I bought my first album when I was 12, Tupac all eyes on me, and then discovered limewire so it was also my only album ever. You mean browsing as in just buying a CD that looked like it might have nice songs?

I still find music that grabs me by the feels. It’s much more rare than it used to be (for me anyway). It’s tough, because (in my opinion) there so much bad music being made. The internet and technology has allowed some artists to be discovered when they previously would have never had the opportunity. But it also makes anyone with internet access able to put stuff into the universe. Double edged sword.

Yeah I have to agree. A lot of music is written by a team of people that just tries to maximize profit and you can hear that. It sounds different than a song created by a group of 3 , jamming around on LSD. How would the internet be responsible for bad songs though?

Same with movies and series, most of the series I watch are just not that entertaining. Just okay enough to watch. Some actually were good but nothing like you can't wait to get home and watch until 5 in the morning.

I find new music by searching, looking at suggestions, YouTube… check out Tiny Desk Concerts on YouTube. The genres are very different and many are musicians or bands I’d never heard of before.

Spend entire days listening to nothing but Bach and Coltrane's discography. Train yourself to hear the mechanics of music. You'll hear things you didn't before, and enjoy things you couldn't before.

Then train yourself to hear other musical languages, like maqams and ragas. If you've run out of music to blow your mind at 23, you haven't looked very hard. Two mind bending, stuff of legend records came out this year alone, "Aethiopes" and "Thisness".

So there are two pieces of Bach I can really enjoy, and everything else I listened just sounds so boring to me. I will listen some more jazz I guess

If you like Chet Baker, you should listen to the man he made his career imitating (who has multiple recordings of that song) Pretty much everything he released between 1956 and 1970 is solid to legendary. Then pick your favorite sidemen from those recordings and use allmusic to find and listen to all their most acclaimed records.

Then, IDK. just listen to "Yessongs".

I'm 44 and finding new music all the time. Keep in mind that as you age your musical tastes will mature, so you may need to embrace new sources for music. I started listening to public radio(CKUA) here in Alberta and also CBC music and I've discovered so much amazing music in the past year. I'm a big classic rock fan, but it gets old after awhile. you have to put the effort in to finding new stuff. I've gone through phases of adult alternative, electronic ambient, electronic retro synth, folk, and even starting to appreciate some country. Don't be afraid to listen to genres you think you don't like, cause some day you might like them.
Edit: also keep in mind that the music that has the deepest impact on us is typically music we're listening to during times of strong emotions. Which is why nothing quite compares to our teen years when our hormones are changing.
