I'm a pretty big bluegrass fan and this past year I've really enjoyed listening to the Punch Brothers Hell on Church Street, which is a track by track cover/reinterpretation of Tony Rice's legendary album Church Street Blues.

Anyone know of any other groups or artists that have covered entire albums like this?

Had tickets to that in Orlando 2 years ago with The Sword and Wolfmother. Covid cancelled it twice, then both opening acts switched. By the time it actually happened I couldn’t go because of work. Was bummed I missed that show

Phish does it every year on Halloween. You can find free audience recordings here.

They even covered an album by a band that doesn’t exist!

real_horse_magic t1_j2cdw13 wrote

Say what you will about Phish that’s gotta be one of my favorite things a band has ever done, just straight up inventing a fake band, writing and rehearsing an albums worth of songs for a one-show gag and playing it relatively straight, like “yes we’re now going to play this legendary lost album by this totally legit, obscure Swedish band”

Dudes in Phish are straight up geeks and they do some of the craziest, funniest stuff

Charlie Hunter Quartet did a reimagined, jazz version of Natty Dread.

A bit of a stretch, but DJ Danger Mouse more or less made his name (to me at least) by mashing up the lyrics from Jay-Z's Black Album and beats that he created from the Beatles' White Album to create The Gray Album.
