Based on influence alone, When Kurt Cobian died it devastated a generation of apathetic latch-key kids. And was the beginning of the decline of MTV as they knew it. I think about The Beatles and wonder the impact of John Lennon death at the time?

Hard to compare as beatles were 10 years finished by then. That's like if Cobain woulda broke up nirvana in 94 then dies in 2004. What a weird alternate universe that would have been.

They are alright, but wouldn't make my top 100.

You may believe they are and that is perfectly fine. I do not share your belief but that is ok too. As was mentioned, Led Zeppelin is always part of the best band conversation. As are the Beatles. Anyway, please continue enjoying Nirvana.

The Beatles could barely play their instruments.

Some of the more overrated instrumentalists that popular music has seen. They were fine but there have been so many other bands with significantly better players.

How are we quantifying this? Is it album sales, concert ticket sales. Or is it based on hoe many songs or albums charted within the top 100? Or is it just opinion?

I dig Nirvana and they definitely changed the face of rock forever. Given that Kurt unfortunately took his own life, the band never really got to see what their greatness could be. In my opinion the best thing Nirvana gave us was Dave Grohl. Whether you like the Foo Fighters or Dave or not, he has been the beacon of rock n roll and just going for it. His passion for music and his fearless approach and advocating for anyone to pick up an instrument, get with some friends in someone's garage and play no matter how much you might suck. Just do it and keep doing it. Have fun and you'll get better. That's what makes him great.

In my opinion there is no singular greatest band. Zeppelin are up there as are the Beatles. But so is Robert Johnson, James Brown, the Stones, Boston, Rush, Frank Zappa, Stevie Ray Vaughn, ZZ Top...

There is no best band of all time. You mean sales? Talent? Maybe one of the better marketed bands that hit at a time when Phil Collins and Whitney Houston were chart toppers and kids wanted something else.

Coldplay and Imagine Dragons would be considered music Gods if it were based on sales alone. It’s just pop drivel.

I think nirvana isn’t the best band, I think it’s become trendy to like nirvana these days, kinda like misfits back in the day.

I think zepplin is far more superior

They’re not because they didn’t mold the entire scape of what became a certain genre. That’s why to me the best band of all time is Led Zeppelin because rock and roll as we know would cease to exist without them. They laid the groundwork for every band to exist after them, Nirvana included.

Now I’m not saying Nirvana wasn’t important or influential, they most certainly were because they brought a sound and a city to the forefront of mainstream music but I don’t personally feel Nirvana was a true pioneer in terms of their impact on music as a whole.

Nirvana was a great band, the band of an entire generation but I don’t feel they’re the best that’s ever existed.
