For me, The Beatles and Green Day (odd mix, right?) are the 2 most important bands in my life. The Beatles were the first artist to help me realize that music wasn’t just words and noise, but something with meaning. After discovering Green Day, they helped me learn that music can also tell a story, such as the one and only “American Idiot” album. Green Day’s music is also so deep, and I had never heard anything like it before. I was able to relate to serious topics in the form of song, and it was something so different that it inspired me in a way. Overall, these 2 artists got me into music, which it’s now a huge aspect of my life.

OK Computer was my intro Radiohead. That album helped me accept my own nihilistic perspective of life while also seeking joy in each day. Every album is it’s own journey. What they’ve accomplished in 25 years of music is incredible.

Grateful Dead. There are other bands I liked before them, and still like, but they started me on a musical journey of discovery that continues to this day.

Dave Matthews Band. They just have so many songs that make me feel good and make my day better. They have so much music that you can get lost in and forget your worries! Also just very very good entertainers!

Pink Floyd's 70s albums gave me a cathartic outlet for the feelings of alienation and isolation I was undergoing for the past couple of years and you could say that it saved me.

I've got a few . . .

Kate Bush showed me that music could be feminine, ethereal, magical and literary and full of story. That music didn't have to just be something catchy or happy. She defined what it meant to be an artist to me.

Old Nightwish with Tarja showed me grandeur and story telling. and escapism.

Florence + the Machine was DEFINING for me and showed me how sounds and genres can combine and merge and really widened my taste as well. Also how to craft music in a DIFFERENT WAY. Rather than just going for highnotes the shifts in texture, vocal placement, how you approach notes? I think she has mastered methods of how to use a voice rather than just typical approaches / technique and it interests me.

Kimbra gave me so much respect and curiosity towards how people can pioneer and create with technology in music.

Utada Hikaru - Was my introduction to any non-English music. She gave me an appreciation for simplicity when done right and that not everything needs belted to have impact. She has mastered warm, cozy, nurturing sounds along with that etherealness at times that I just love.

Antony & The Johnsons was REALLY important for me because they showed me what trans and LGBTQ+ people can do in music and that we don't have to be fitting into a mold to do what we do. I thought what she was doing as a transwoman was groundbreaking and still do.

The Jackson 5, and Genesis in the Peter Gabriel era, because they were the first bands I really got into.

Jimi Hendrix for waking me up to rock and distorted guitars. Coolest guy ever.

Tom Waits for showing me that real emotion has a place in music.

Babymetal for reminding me not to be a snob but to enjoy good music from outside-the-box, regardless of gatekeepers, and for waking me up to a ton of amazing Japanese musicians.

Nemophila for demonstrating a perfect combination of great songs, great musicianship, great personality, fun and crushing power. My current favourite band.

Apologies for being totally unable to pick just one.

Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift. Avril's music brings me a lot of good memories from when I was a kid, and she's been a part of my life since I was 13. As for Taylor, her music just resonates with me in a good way. Her music is like an escape because her lyrics are so creative and takes my mind to another place. I also love the way she writes songs and how she is so good at telling stories

Every band that helped me get through some really rough times is important to me. So, Van Halen w/DLR. DLR band when he did Eat'em and smile/Sky scraper. RUSH from their first album up to Hold Your Fire. The Tragically Hip. Type O Negative.

Then there are many bands that had a song or two that supported.

Elton John - I grew up hearing his music and to this day, I listen to a wide variety of music, he is consistently one of my top favorite artists. His music is immersive for me, whether I’m feeling good or bad, it makes me feel better. He’s done so much good work for the lgbtq+ community and at this stage of his career he invests a lot of time supporting and mentoring younger artists.

I'll go with my top 3

Breaking Benjamin - This band defines my roots as a 00s kid raised on Alt, Post Grunge and Nu Metal. Emotionally charged, melodic music with a metal kick to it

Balmorhea - This band represents my appreciation for traditional instruments, but also for experimental structures and textures

Rishloo - This band is an example of the perfect fusion of the previously listed attributes of my taste. I didn't have any way to make amends between what seemed like very separated music styles until I found Prog. This band was the first one of many and still might be my favorite band

Local Dallas area bands are important to me.

Ten Hands was my favorite band when I lived in Denton, Texas in the late 1980s. I went to almost every local show they played in Denton and Dallas all throughout that time (roughly the 1990s) til they disbanded. I have caught a few of their reunion shows, too.

Jackopierce was another of my local favorites in Dallas. I spent a lot of weekend nights in Deep Ellum hearing them play at Trees.

Now, I follow a small local Oak Cliff / Dallas band called The Last City. I met them when I hired them to make some videos for one of my freelance clients and learned that they also have a band. I can’t wait til they start playing around town again.

The Eagles - They have some absolute masterpieces, and their music is so thoughtful and emotional, I just love em.

Chris Cornell - My all time favorite singer and songwriter. His voice was one of a kind and his lyrics were so thought provoking, and they will stand the test of time.

Gojira and Death

When i saw Gojira live at my first ever concert (knotfest Iowa 2021), i was blown away. That first scream from Joe Duplantier on Born for One Thing changed my entire perspective on music.

Death solidified what gojira did to my taste and introduced me into the world of death metal and progressive death metal. I discovered Opeth shortly after, which became my favorite band.

The Beatles and the doors The Beatles was the first group I was into when I was young and I was obsessed with them for years. They really got me into music. The doors has inspired me with performing.(I perform shows at school of rock) I love seeing how jim Morrison would perform, it looked like he was having fun. Their songs always gave me goosebumps whenever I listen to them. They are both two of my bands.
