When did music change?

Is it just me or has everything after 2017 just transform into a new style? The charts music from 2012-mid 2016 was the best (UK top 40). I listened to the charts every week and bought the NOW albums, which contained the best songs of the past two months. By 2017 I stopped listening to the charts so much and buying the CDs. What happened to music by 2017-2018?

2022 has got even worse, they’ve been remixing Elton John and that I’m Blue song and they now sound awful, plus TikTok and Apple Music is a thing now so this crap is getting ten times more popularity than any good music.

I'm Gen-X and I try to consume as much new music as possible. I don't wanna ever be that guy that mutters the best has already past. Even if it has, am I really gonna listen to that for the rest of my life?

No but when I was 9,10,11 even 12 the music was great. I can’t help but think hip hop has replaced the music of before 2017. Or it could be because I’m British but chart music from 2018 onwards has become VERY Americanised. A lot of it seems to be designed for 14 year olds in California.

Hip hop has been mainstream since the early 90’s.

To be fair, there’s been a recent resurgence in the UK rap scene in the last couple of years

He is right. For me alt rock scene of 00-10's was the best while some people miss Nirvana and Micheal Jackson some others.

Try listening to more obscure artists. That's where you'll find the real gems. My favorite way to find more music I'd like is by looking at who opened for my favorite bands on their past tours and then going their "fans of ____ also like" sections.

No but the pop music pre-2016 was great and still is. 2016 was a bit iffy. I feel as if heavily Americanised Hip hop took over in 2017. Cardi B and Post Malone kind of music randomly just took over.

This is focusing on the microscope that the mainstream is putting in front of you based on $$$ (what's marketable and consumable to the majority)
Music is insanely easy to access now, so we need to do our due justice and support what is good. Also important to be flexible and open minded to some of the new styles coming out. I listen to everything from The Bee Gees to XXXTentacion :)

There's just a lot more stuff out now, all the time. It's not curated except by algorithms for the most part, so trendy shit is pushed to the top even if it sounds like shit. Also, think about this: who are the people who define themselves by what music they listen to? Pretty much teenagers. So they're the trend setters as far as internet popular music.

There's tons of great music out there, new or old, it's just not popular and generally harder to find.

I’ve posted a similar comment but what I feel, British born 2003, is that music ever since 2017 has became too Americanised. Is it just me or did hip hop take over the charts? I mean, American music existed in the charts before that but the type of music in the charts has become so American these days. TikTok has definitely changed music trends, and not for the best. Something happened in 2017 and music changed massively.

musics always going to change. There's always people making music of every era thank to the internet so I'm sure there are loads of people right now making what you like just not on the charts cause it's not what's popular at the moment.

it’s not just you. tiktok is ruining music culture. combined with greed executives at record labels. Most labels don’t know what’s going to hit so they’re using what’s proven to work. There aren’t many risk takers these days. If you want to find great music you have to search deep underground. Most of the playlists for radio/Spotify are controlled by major labels so they’re usually the ones taking the shots. I work in music and i’ve seen so much bs get put through it’s hilarious
