So I had my mind blown today. For context, I got an iPod video in 2006 or so. Being a kid, I was only tech savvy enough to use Limewire, and dumb enough not to verify where anything came from. So unbeknownst to me, I hadn't gotten the official album release version of Lord, Send me an Angel. But we'll get back to that.

I listened to my iPod religiously as a teen, and pretty much never took my earbuds out (rip my hearing, probably). So I KNOW how the song sounds, in my head. When I got that song randomly stuck in my head, I went to Spotify to play it- and the song I heard wasn't the version I knew. To me, it sounded so boring, and melodic. The version I knew was gritty, even like White was shouting at points, and had this fun high energy that I loved. So I went to youtube, and it was the same. I couldn't find the version I had.

So I dug my iPod out and let it charge, and found my last pair of wired earphones (with one bud missing). I had to make sure I wasn't just imagining things, or misremembering. But once I scrolled the wheel down to the White Stripes, there it was- "Send Me an Angel Dead Leaves, The White Stripes, Peel Session 08.11.01" (this explains why I never knew the name of the song, either, and why when I looked up 'Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground', it wasn't the song I expected).

So I went back to youtube and looked up White Stripes Peel Session- which showed me a video with a bunch of songs like this, but not the one I was looking for. Then I found this- it's Lord Send me an Angel, and Dead Leaves on the Dirty Ground, in one video, and it's the version I got on my iPod. Hand to god I think this is the better version of the song, but this video only has 40k views!

I don't know if it's more available than I think it is, or if most people know of it and just prefer the album version, but I wanted to share this video for any White Stripes fans who might like it as much as I grew to like it, because if 40k views is all it has on Youtube then it is being criminally un-listened-to.

Enjoy! I had fun remembering the early wild west of limewire and sharing music online. I'm lucky I never downloaded anything worse than a weird version of the song I wanted!

Just go ahead and jump down the John Peel rabbit hole. Man is/was responsible for half of my catalog. What an ear šŸ‘āœŒļø

Could you explain a little about who he is/what a 'Peel session' is? I see in the video's description that it was recorded for BBC radio. Did he do this with other bands? Did he tell them what to do?

John Peel was a legendary British Radio DJ. I couldnā€™t possibly explain in detail sufficient to honor him, as heā€™s a bit of a hero to me, and would take me all night to write.

Iā€™d imagine Wiki would have a list of all of the artists he unleashed on my melted brain through his sessions for Radio 1. Shaped my lifeā€¦for real. If youā€™re as passionate about music as you sound, itā€™ll be a long but fruitful journey!

New rabbit hole discovered! thank you! It sounds like whoever was uploading the track on limewire must have been a fan of John Peel haha

John Peel worked for BBC Radio. He is responsible for the careers of many artists. For example, he got his hands on a copy of Laurie Andersonā€™s ā€˜O Supermanā€™ and played it a lot. Because of this unexpected popularity in UK, Anderson found herself being offered a major label deal. This is just one example of the Peel effect! He tirelessly championed The Fall (gotta throw that in there). His ā€œPeel Sessionsā€ was a regular thing for years. Sooo many bands recorded Peel Sessions. I had a CD anthology of all the Wedding Present Peel Sessions. Loved that CD.

Getting played on Peelā€™s show was a big deal for alternative artists. A lot of bandsā€™ and artistsā€™ music was influenced by John Peel because they listened so much to his show and were inspired by the music they heard.

There have been radio and TV docs made about him. You can find some on YouTube.
