Many great artists from history were, in some ways, despicable humans. Ernest Hemingway was a cross dressing wife beater. Stephen Tyler, Jerry Lee Lewis and Elvis Presley married/banged teenaged girls. Matthew Broderick and Laura Bush killed people in car accidents and god knows MANY of the biggest movers and shakers from the early 20th century were well known antiSemites, from Henry Ford to Charles Lindbergh.

Art is art and, as far as I'm concerned, you enjoy it or you don't. You can separate the art from the artist.

of course you can separate art from artist, but why would you want to? if my favorite artist says some foul shit that I have a moral/ethical issue with, why would I want to separate their art. and how does that separation work? don't you hear the person's voice & the sound of the voice makes you think of the person & if you think of a person who makes you sick, it's gonna remind you how much they make you sick. so yeah, you can say you separate it, but realistically how much do you actually separate. now if you were just a follower who was boycotting an artist because everyone else was, I guess it's easy to separate it, but if a person actually offends you on a moral level, separation isn't so easy

I find this depends on what the artist is singing about. If it's something completely incongruent with their behaviour or beliefs, like say Chris Brown singing about women, I have to switch the song off.

But if it's something entirely unrelated, I don't really tend to get those thoughts as much.

Whatever makes you feel like a better person. I think life is way too short to eliminate the things that make me happy because I disagree with the artist. This notion that everyone who disagrees with you is despicable and worthy of cancellation will be the death of our culture.

The purpose of laws protecting free speech is specifically to protect the speech that offends you. To listen to many people these days this is no longer a value worth defending. That's very sad and will spell doom for our future.
