Such a depressing situation. Newarks black vs latino war makes literally no sense considering both of our communities are very very similar when it comes to our values and beliefs.
I spent my middle school years in Plainfield, and the growing Latino population was never an issue for us kids.
The adults were annoyed because, "Plainfield used to be all black" but we as kids never had any beef and I cherish those days.
Maybe it's because we were dealing with Mexicans and Puerto Ricans as opposed to Portuguese, but tbh, I don't get why there's even a divide over there, why there's even a divide with the ironbound.
I don't know enough about this situation to claim both sides are the issue, but more than anything, I'm sad it's happening.
We have bigger issues at hand.

Portuguese are white. This is most likely not involving them much.

I have coworkers who live in Plainfield and we can have civil conversations about politics and current events and they tell their older relatives have asked where the blackness in Plainfield has gone to this day

When I was in central highschool last year, my school was able to do things for every race but mainly Hispanic and black history month. Both months both are important to the school, their is never racial tension. Even though Hispanics have no problem saying the N word to each other and black students. But I would imagine a largely Hispanic populated school to be like this but central is largely black but our Hispanic counterparts never felt uncared for. If your a central devil were equal

Isn’t this schools latino population largely dominican and puerto rican? Or has that changed?

They be some of the most racist ones

Classic clickbaity title and the article never went into depth about these incidents. This isn't an actual problem like it is in LA probably just bullying and mild banter.

Most cases the news won't go into detail because it involves minors unless it's a actually crime
LordStirling83 t1_j7nux62 wrote
Yeah, I was curious what the actual incidents were. The article doesn't offer much detail, though the students interviewed seem quite upset about the situation.

I believe it. I teach in Newark at a half Black half Hispanic school and the anti-Blackness from Hispanics is clear.

Why hasn't the mom whose kids are involved in all the beef recused herself?

I maybe in the minority opinion on this but I don't understand why you need a student club such as the black student union based on race in a public school in general meeting in a public school building. You can have it just have the meeting somewhere else because it causes division. If it's not a club based on a school class or a netural thing like sports or technology it shouldn't be held on school grounds
Nwk_NJ t1_j7mz216 wrote
They had the black students union at my community College. I'm straight up white...I was invited to many of their events and loved it...nothing wrong w having black organizations. They have been some of the most welcoming and good-will facilitating groups I've been around...I'm sure it's the same for Latino groups and others. Kids will also be kids and find beef over whatever they can. For every crew beefing over race though, I'm sure there are diverse crews beefing over something else. This societyl is race OBSESSED on every level and from every political angle though, so I'm not sure why anyone is surprised that kids are resorting to this type of nonsense. Of course, due to our societal obsession, this type of story is highlighted though too..
Jimmy_kong253 t1_j7mzmjy wrote
Well the obsession with race is driven by media and politicians which are both owned by the multi industry corporations. Gotta distract the poor and middle class well the rich rob us blind
RainCloudz973 t1_j7ymlno wrote
The convo you’re having here is very off to me. You’re not making a sharp class analysis if you’re denying how race and capitalism are intertwined. For some reason you seem to think pinning this “race obsession” on media brainwashing is a legitimate critique instead of a poor excuse to deny the reality of racial tension in America. But whether you acknowledge it or not, the fact of anti-Blackness and other racisms remain, as they are predicated by an ongoing history that pours into our (Black people, in this case) daily lives. This whole “Black Student Union causes more divide” thing is crap. What causes divide is the lived experience of anti-Blackness in modern society, and we Black people are obviously more than right for using solidarity as a way to preserve ourselves during it. If you want to deny us or any deeply marginalized group this right, then you are quite literally part of the problem, and history has proven that time after time.

You think telling the black student union they can no longer meet on school grounds will fix racial tensions? You crazy dude.
Jimmy_kong253 t1_j7op36e wrote
Any club to do with race in general the black union club was just the one mentioned in the article. We as a society have to get out of our bubbles and echo chambers both in life and entertainment. It's part of the reason there's so much divide in this country more mixing less tv
Echos_myron123 t1_j7p32v2 wrote
Black students unions fight back against racism. Other groups formed around race are just racist. You can't just say any group that has to do with race is bad without making that distinction.
Jimmy_kong253 t1_j7p3wi9 wrote
So if somebody wanted to start a Spanish student union or a Irish student union those are automatically considered racist?
Echos_myron123 t1_j7pften wrote
There are Spanish and Irish heritage organizations in the U.S. Do schools not celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Who do you think hosts the St. Patricks parade down Halsey Street evey year? Black student unions exist on campuses because black students have historically been discriminated against in places of education so they needed to organize to fight for their interests.

Article says something like 4.6% of the school students are "non-Hispanic whites."
Is that the Portuguese kids?

I’m not quite sure how to process this? This is quite silly. Hispanic is not a race or racial category and Latinos can be black, white, mixed race, indigenous and literally any race, and yes there are Hispanic people who are black.
It sounds like students fighting or having an altercation which was viewed from an angle of race.
RainCloudz973 t1_j7ymz82 wrote
Very disturbing amount of ignorance in these comments. I’m assuming you guys are not teachers in Newark schools if you think that there aren’t blatant shows of anti-Blackness from Hispanic students to Black. And maybe in other schools Black students return that energy or initiate it, but I’d believe that’s less often. Hispanics have been habitually anti-Black for decades while living right next to us in urban communities. Anyone unaware of / denying this has either not lived through it, paid enough attention, or been in a position to observe it happening.

This is peak neo-liberalism. 🤣🤣
First divide people up by race, then rank order them by the magnitude of the “oppression” they have suffered . Throw in a big dollop of victimhood and entitlement to boot.
When the school implodes, everyone involved is “shocked” at what happened.
Meanwhile only 15% of the students body can read or do math at grade level🤷🏾♂️
