In that area you’re more likely to be victimized by your landlord than by a criminal on the street

I walk through there pretty much every day. In my brain, this is the office park part of Newark; clean with nothing but tumbleweeds after bank hours

Ehh clean isn’t a word I’d use to describe it. It’s safe, but you’ll also see human feces on the street every now and then

I have walked in this area at all times of the day and night over the last five years and never had a problem.

Is a safe area but is mostly comercial, there are apartment buildings opening up right next to Fornos of Spain, the restaurant on the lower right corner of the map (Ironbound) which is also pretty safe and just a couple blocks from the station.

I've lived in Summit my whole life and went to school in Newark. Newark isn't exactly Summit...

I grew up in Short Hills and have lived within that box for 18 months. You'll be fine.

Apples and oranges. Let's not pretend Summit's downtown is clean and "nice". Bums there too.

One of the safest. Just a huge homeless problem

I’ve never felt unsafe within that red box. The truth is, there really aren’t that many people living there, and the ones who do just don’t give 2 fucks about you. There are some streets that aren’t lit too well at night and it can feel a little creepy because there’s no one at all around, but that’s actually pretty rare.

On occasion, there will be loud verbal fights between people who don’t sound like they’re all there mentally. Sometimes these happen at night. Again, I’ve never felt unsafe, but it is a thing

Newark is really poorly lit at night especially downtown

This is an interesting way to tell Reddit that you got lots of disposable income

Would there be any trouble walking to/from Penn late night? Considering Bayonne/Harrison too which might be better areas since prices/sq ft. are similar. No car.

GhostOfRobertTreat t1_j9ww5fs wrote

About as fine as it gets. Little quiet at night but there are some additional residential projects opening soon that should add more eyes on the street.

Edit: Though on closer look there are few resi buildings in that red box. It’s mostly commercial.

I've been in and out of penn between midnight and 5am. It's fine. Only thing to note is they close all but the eastern entrance for security late at night, as they turn the main hall into a temporary homeless shelter overnight. So if you're fine with that, you're fine living there. The homeless don't bother you. Worst I heard of was one yelling toward my roommate on their way into NYC on their morning commute.

Being car free as well, Newark is the best location in NJ if you have any desire or need to go anywhere beyond Hudson County and NYC. Buses and trains in every cardinal direction. You can get 10 or so bus lines within that square to quickly get to Broad Street Station to go back to Summit.

This is a nice area. If you don’t think it is you’re probably just scared for whatever odd reason as a matter of fact I want an apartment in that same area.

Marv95 t1_ja1hxo0 wrote

As long as you stay east of Broad Street and have experience with urban environments you'll be fine. It's just dead at night unless there's an even at the Prudential Center. Watch out for any homeless junkies that the city doesn't have the guts to control. Not as bad as the west coast junkies but still.
