Do you really think this guy is going to be able to run up to and stop a carjacking? Or do you think heâll likely get shot in the gut if he tries?
So you think it's a good idea for a potential set of eyes to a carjacking to not be there, and thus not call 911 and report it in progress, as opposed to maybe the victim of the carjacking getting shot and not getting anything until they're dead?
The most dangerous weapon in the world is a radio or cell phone. I'm 99% sure that Midnight knows how to use his. Whatever kind of crap it was that people drummed up as "concerned citizens" - oh wait, they were "college students" - was likely just some gomer who doesn't like the fact that someone finds joy by donning the identity of a hero, putting a lot of us to shame by virtue of the fact that we don't help people as our own damn selves.
I think another set of eyes is great and why I encouraged him to set up a neighborhood watch with other people with a direct line to the police. I think walking around by yourself in a full face mask taking âaction shotsâ and thinking youâre going to stop crime yourself is a quick way to end up in the hospital. Iâm not against him wanting to walk around and keep an eye out. Itâs the implication that heâs going to try to stop something himself while wearing a homemade mask because he thinks heâs a superhero that concerns me. Feel like Iâm going to read in RLS about some 19 year old North Ward kid getting shot because he ran up to a carjacking to try to stop it.

I'm assuming Midnight is a grown adult human, which means he can make his own choices. I think someone whose activities thus far are walking the streets and keeping an eye out or distributing hand warmers to unhoused people at Penn Station is far, far removed from a comic book superhero swooping in to save the innocent directly. He seems like a sensible enough human being to know when not to charge up to an assailant - I hope this much, at least - and I'd rather have someone who attempts to do good than not.
He's out to set a positive example, period. IMO it's unfair to compare him to the Guardian Angels, mostly because they're a funded organization with what I understand to be some degree of training on what they can, cannot, should, and should not do as a volunteer, with some form of relationship with the NYPD. This is one person who wants to make a difference. If he wants to lead by example rather than by organization, who are we to tell him no?

I understand where you and the 25 other people who upvoted your comment (who I geuss dont like interaction/joke) are coming from, but simply going to the police who already don't do jack in a city devoid of hope and faith and joining a neighborhood watch, aint it.

That doesnât make any sense. What is the scenario where someone sees your face and then tracks you and your family down? You think youâre going to intervene in a crime and hand over criminals to the police? And the criminals are going to get out and walk around the neighborhood until they find you?
What are you actually planning on doing while wearing a mask? Are you going to run up and intervene if you witness an assault? A drug deal? A carjacking? A shooting? The odds are much greater youâll be retaliated against violently in the moment if you come upon some crime.
The Guardian Angels in NYC patrolled in brightly colored uniforms with their faces exposed. Itâs their actual presence that was supposed to reduce crime. Not actually intervening in criminal incidents. Neighborhood watches are real things that people do. Criminals donât commit crime where there are witnesses. They do it where they can get away with it. If they know an area has regular people walking around a lot at night, they will move elsewhere.
