It could be for a few reasons.
-
The Hotel was labeled as a Public Nuisance because of the drug use and prostitution. And had to be shut down.
-
The Bank took over the Hotel because the owner(s) were not making the payments. Likely because they had so many people squatting.
Either way I am happy. The place was an eye sore for a long time. Things needed to change.

Admittedly, I'll miss occasionally reading through reviews from horrified out of town patrons... some are really funny. But agreed about the change. Especially since there are a couple of new(er) developments on Clinton Ave that a renovated Riviera can compliment. It's a beautiful building from the outside.

I can’t believe people was still using that hotel on their travels. I’m shocked. Night stays must was super cheap.

I’m ok with that. Better than what’s there now. That area can be beautiful with some gentrification. I want Newark to be beautiful and safe.

They were at $60-70 a night at 1 point

Prostitution is a dog whistle now?

Everything is a dogwhistle, if you distort reality enough.
But yeah lol, there are legit people who would say that.

Hopefully that big vacant lot next to it gets developed

Same! Rent won’t ever be 3500 in that area but I’m honestly fine with luxury apartments there.

That lot has been vacant as long as I can remember since I was in high school. I’m in my 30’s. So it’s probably been vacant for over 20 years.

So I can’t find any news articles on this yet, I’m assuming because it’s probably very new as of yesterday. I know someone who stays there long term (unfortunately). They are giving her family and others that stay there section 8 that can be used in any state because they have to vacate the location.
This is All I know so far. Don’t know why it’s closing. A bid to convert the Riviera to apartments was turned down back in October. So I don’t know what possibly could be happening now. But that area needs this. The Riviera unfortunately attracted drug addicts, prostitution, etc. hopefully something is coming there to raise the neighborhood’s livability and value.
