I recently rewatched* this movie and it's so great. I love how Kurt Russell is just a huge dope who thinks he's the protagonist.

It’s part of the fun, in my opinion. It completely runs amok with the “Hero With a Thousand Faces” path and, still, is an absolutly fun and interesting story. Joseph Campbell must be in after lige scratching his head and wondering “how the heck did this actually worked?”

Well... It works by playing with expectations off the hero's journey (including the casting choice). Because the other side characters are actually the heroes.

Exactly. A complete reversal of the plot that should be “irreversible”. 😄👍

Apparently the studio had real problems with this! During the whole movie making they were dumbfounded that Kurt Russell’s character behave the way he did and wasn’t some major hero.

James Hong has been in so many movies

And still working!

This is still one of his best roles, though I think his most interesting, lower key, role was as a sleazy private eye in 1987's Black Widow.

He gets a bit typecast though. James Hong has been the old Asian guy in nearly every American movie with an old Asian guy, for my entire lifetime.

I was glad when they let him start portraying ducks.

Well, let’s be fair… he IS an old Asian guy. And who better to play an old Asian guy then an old Asian guy?

There's a recent well reviewed comic series co-written by Carpenter that picks up where the film left off

In those scenes as Lo Pan, Hong actually adlibs a bunch of Cantonese that is just hilarious.
