Tube socks would've been great for when your foot slips off the pedal and your shin gets torn off lol

Not with the metal "shin shark" pedals!! Those things would eat right thru those socks like a hot knife thru butter! gif

That makes sense lol. I am a bit younger but I'm pretty sure there's some faint memories in my mind of bloody socks while riding bikes in the 90s.

Some protection but not near enough

Those socks are something that just never made it to the UK but seem to be really prevalent in the US in that era!

Where did that come from, basketball or something?

drummingcraig OP t1_jadol17 wrote

Yeah I think they were really common in basketball back then, and particularly a carryover from the 70s.

Nice catch!!! That totally rattled my memory. That would've belonged to my best friend's younger brother (which explains him riding past).

I was thinking the same thing. I had the KITT big wheel long ago (which I still had it)

In my town, the pediatric dentist and the bike shop owner were brothers. The dentist paid to make sure all BMX bike purchasers got that little handlebar pad for free.

Thats fantastic. I was never really into track riding or jumping. I do recall the lower frame pad cushioning my "hacky sack" a couple of times when I slipped off the seat trying to jump a small ramp. Still hurt like hell though.

Good lord, I miss that year, and that age.

I had that same bike in the early 90s as a kid. But the frame was red with orange padding.

I loved the brakes on that bike. It took practice but you could lock the brakes and fishtail the back out for a truly epic stop.

YES!!! I was never great at doing it, but had some friends who could really whip it around. I was better at just locking up the brakes and trying to leave some skid marks on the pavement. :)

Is that a Swatch watch?

1

drummingcraig OP t1_jado8bx wrote

I don't believe so. I don't ever recall owning an actual Swatch brand watch. As best I recall it was just a digital Casio with the LCD that was common for this era (google "Casio F91W").

Replace that with a Murray X20-R and it’s me lol.
