He was a crochety fellow, said he absolutely hated Scotland (weather), England (people), and France (people), but loved the Netherlands and Germany (food).

Several times. He ended up foraging a lot because he hated Army food and his unit loved him for it.

Yeah, I know that. He received his initial training after he was drafted and then got moved around a bit before being shipped to Europe for D-Day.

Cool. My dad was in high school then. 3 years later, he was a replacement paratrooper for Airborne 17th, who took heavy casualties. He arrived in England after D-Day.
