A favorite meal of many of the miners, was the Cornish pasty, as many of the miners immigrated to the u.s, were Cornish, similar to a piecrust, filled with sliced or ground meat, veggies and potatoes, they wrapped thier pasties in cloths to keep their food warm, until lunch time. N. Michigan still has numerous locations that specialize in baking pasties.if you get a chance, try one, they are some real good eating.

I had my first pasty in October in Marquette! Lovely meal. Beautiful area. As I understand, the place I ate at was a pillar of the pasty community. Sadly has closed according to google.

Just remember to say "pasty" with a short "a". Those of us from the area will laugh at you if you say it with a long "a." We'll still give you one though. gif

There were also quite a few Italian immigrants there as well. My grandfather made a living translating for them.
