Every once in awhile, my brain will blast, "NOW SIGMUND THE SEA MONSTER AND JOHNNY AND SCOTT ARE FRIENDS!" into my thoughts for no apparent reason.

Johnny Whitaker, blast from the past...

Live Action content for kids was very limited in the 70s, so we took what we could get. And I think Sigmund was a product of its time. Looking back, this show and HR Pufinstuf were like fever dreams!

eta I just checked out the IMDb page for this show, and there were so many 'famous' character actors who had small parts!

I loved this and even more, HR PuffnStuff. Such a crush on Jack Wild! (The musical Oliver reinforced this.)

They're hard to watch as an adult, though.

Praise be to Rip Taylor, brought in to spice up Season 2. Sid and Marty Krofft knew all the best queens.

Sid and Marty Kroft were definitely tripping. And I know the entire HR Puffnstuff theme song.

Damn sid and Marty krofft were my childhood.

Sometimes, I'll bring up the lidsville opening to freak my friends out. Good times.

I'm fully convinced that the Krofts were dropping acid all through the 70's. Lidsville, H.R. Puffinstuff, the Bugaloos, and Sigmund were all super weird and trippy.

Holy crap, I had no idea what it was called, but my uncle used to force my brother and I to watch it in the 90s.

I used to know Sid Krofft but I didnā€™t know it for a while. I used to go to a gym in Hollywood in the 90s and there was this guy who was there a lot. Super nice guy, we always chatted about random stuff but never introduced ourselves. Then one day the front desk announced ā€œSid Krofft, line oneā€ and I was like ā€œoh wowā€.

The architect of my childhood. Seemed like such a happy guy. Complete gentleman.

You can see an old Johnny Whitaker in ā€œA Talking Cat?!ā€ Look for the Rifftrax version, though.

Here's a fun fact about the Kroffts:

McDonalds hired an advertising agency, who reached out to them to create the McDonaldland characters (Grimace, Hamburgler, Mayor McCheese etc.) based on their H.R. Puffinstuff characters.

They did as asked, and created the characters and were all seen and pictures taken of the costumes. Then the agency called the Kroffts and told them the Mcdonalds ad campaign had been canceled.

The agency actually used the pictures they took and hired former employees of the Kroffts to create the sets and costumes and even hired Krofft's voice actor to do several of the voices for their commercials.

The Kroffts sued. Initially were awarded $50K. They appealed the judgement and were then awarded $1.04M on appeal.

Grew up in Southern California Iā€™m a beach city. The homes in the neighborhood looked the same as in the show. And I believed that the show was about my neighborhood. I believed that Johnny and Scott were neighbors. The kids in the neighborhood dressed the same as in the show for the most part.

My 3 sisters and my favorites: The Monkees (we each had our favorite Monkee; RIP Peter Tork), the Osmonds, the Cowsills, Jack Wild and Mark Lester, Bobby Sherman, Kurt Russell, Michael Landon, David Selby of Dark Shadows fame, and pretty much all the guys from Here Come The Brides!

2

humanregularbeing t1_je0g9ik wrote

:-)!

We made a model of the town in Here Come the Brides out of a shoebox. You lifted the lid and the sides fell down. The long part became the main road. One long side stayed up and became the saloon and the place where the girls lived. The other long side lay flat and was the water, the dock with some ships. We also made stand-up cardboard characters (and maybe horses?). Then you could put it away at the end.

We must be remembering the same couple of years, although maybe I'm a bit before you. You forgot the Jackson 5, the Partridge Family (went with my younger sister to a David Cassidy concert!), the Brady Bunch, Johnny Whitaker, the guys from Emergency (?!)ā€¦ I'd better stop.

Another part of it was the fold-up posters. Do young people have posters these days (they also came in LP albums)? They have to have fold marks and the corners have to be torn from all the times they've been taped and re-taped to the walls.

Such fun.

The funny thing is, I'm in my late twenties, so it's another shock to their system when I show them something from way before both our time. It's the horror of the show packed in with "how the fuck did you watch this?" Hahaha

Travelgrrl t1_je36v2o wrote

The town model sounds amazing. My older sisters made an entire town for troll dolls (the 1960's ones) for us all to play with and they called it "Lilliput" which I didn't get until I was an adult.

I DID like the Jackson 5, but we didn't care for any teen idols from Partridge Family, Brady Bunch, or Sigmund. Randolph Mantooth - YES.
