I had an Orange Krate.

I took it off jumps.

I'm amazed that I had children.

My grandpa would tell me we were going to the hardware store to get a bike. Turned out it was the county dump and he would pick out a few bikes, bring them home and make one good one of them. Poor wasn't the word.

All it needed was the shift knob to be in the shape of a fist.

I remember seeing those as a kid and thinking "Wow!". Now, I see the picture and just think "Ow!".

newtbob t1_itnrkzk wrote

Another Orange Krate, here. Suspension has come a long way. And, just like cars, disc brakes beat the shit out of drum brakes. But I rode the shit out of that thing.

5

briareus08 t1_ito6uba wrote

Were the different models just different colours?

3

newtbob t1_itofsgx wrote

Just the colors. Orange was first, then a year or two later the others.

The_Sanch1128 t1_itopnkv wrote

Spent most of my bar mitzvah money on one of these. Parents said I had to leave it outside (there really wasn't a place for it unless I put it in my room). Did. Four weeks later, a tornado damaged houses on our street. Some rubbernecker stole my bike (and lots of other stuff on our street) from right in front of our townhouse. Parents bought me some cheap POS as a "replacement".

The only good part is that I never came close to damaging my future ability to have children. My personality and looks took care of that.

[deleted] t1_itpshy1 wrote

At least you can be certain it wasn’t because you chose the Pea Picker.

The_Sanch1128 t1_itq3cu5 wrote

I was 13 and foolish when I got that bike. About a year later, I looked back on it and thought, "What the hell were you thinking? WERE you thinking?"

I'll also give my parents some credit for letting me make my own mistake.

[deleted] t1_itps6er wrote

This was the bike we all wanted—and it was stupid expensive, like $130. An “expensive “ bike at the time was about $69.95, and a regular banana bike about $39.95 or so. Big difference. Only one kid in our neighborhood had an Apple Krate. He couldn’t leave it anywhere, even locked up.
