Ahh those masks that fog up your skin, with edges that cut and the elastic string that's stapled on.

But yeah this is 80s.

I had that same Darth Vader costume but yeah it was probably 1980 or 1981.. Smurfs definitely weren't a thing in the 70s at least not here.

Wrong decade but if the intent was to remind me how shitty costumes were back then, then mission accomplished.

Yeah you are probably right. My mom sent me this picture and when I asked her when it was she told me 70's. But she was in school during both 70's and 80's so she very well could have mixed it up

Halloween 1977, Superman and Evel Knievel were very popular, surprised to see Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker and Han Solo and Chewbacca were also popular. I was R2 D2 with a paper mache dome mom made. Couldn’t see a thing and had to be carried by my arms up stairs with a parent on each side.

Edit: Smurf off you stupid smurf! Ruining my happy memory of 1977!

As a person of a certain age that actually wore masks such as these, let me tell you they really sucked. The plastic stank, it made you itchy and it made you sweat like you were in the Sahara in July…

Korith_Eaglecry t1_iujar7c wrote

I remember how God awful these things were to wear. The whole thing being this thin plastic that was still able to make you sweat and you'd stew in this all say or a good portion of it during the class Halloween party. And the masks, always moist and hot from breathing on the damn things.

kinkyghost t1_iujayuz wrote

Holy fuck lol I just remembered how much my 90s childhood Halloween costume masks smelled, never connected until now that that shit was all probably not the best to be breathing lol

Those awful plastic costumes that had the picture of what the costume was supposed to be on the front of the costume. Gawd I hated wearing those.

EuSouOGringo t1_iujgazk wrote

Was explaining to my son this morning, as he donned his $30, 100% show-accurate Mandalorian armor, that costumes in the 80s really sucked. He lives in a golden age.

Who wants a Megatron costume made of garbage bag plastic, that has a picture of Optimus Prime on the chest? This is the LEAST likely Megatron possible.

I need to point out, that that is NOT an Evil Knievel costume.

It is DUKES OF HAZZARD!

Smurfs have been around since the late 1950s. I mean, for the sake of argument, we could say it is the 70s, and a German relative sent over a Smurf costume for the kid. It's not likely, but...you never know. ;)

UnRollThePlay t1_iujpqau wrote

I distinctly remember when the Smurf’s showed up in 81 because they replaced my favorite cartoon Dungeons and Dragons.

Saturday morning bowl of cereal ready, excited for new D&D cartoon and LA LA LA LALALA…what the fuck is this shit.

Hated smurfs ever since.
