I think this was one of my first introductions to things being advertised as being much cooler than they actually were. I remember picking out costumes like that only to realized the day of halloween that the masks would break if you sat on them and the clothing was just more plastic.

Or the little rubber band that held it in your face would snap after 10 minutes so you'd have to either hold it on your face, or go sans mask for the rest of the night.

I grew up in this era and my mom and I saw these costumes at the store but my mom would not let me have them because the masks were unsafe (she was right too!) so we ended up making a costume every year, or using a costume that did not involve plastic masks. I was a very lucky kid with the home made costume, everyone envied the kids with the home made costumes.
