Samhain was cooler than The Misfits IMO. I love The Misfits, but Samhain was better.

Oh see, I do love the Misfits better but everybody got choices

Yeah. I love the Misfits too, they are one of the bands that got me in to punk. I owe them a debt of gratitude for that, for sure.

SilverNightFairy t1_it7g05c wrote

Yup, me too. My friends had The Go Go’s and I had the Misfits 😂

I love The Go-Go’s as well. I’m a strange guy, I guess. Lol

Exactly, Lmao. You gotta have fun sometimes. Plus, The Go-Go’s where pretty punk when they first started out.

I like them both (and The Undead, Misfits without Danzig. Have you heard them?)

They kind of went backwards compared to other bands. The Misfits had more widespread appeal, they were horror movie nerds who sang punk rock. Then Samhain got less kitschy and darker and didn't have the same branding. They got "serious" and didn't care about their skull shirts being sold in skate shops anymore.

I haven’t heard The Undead. I’ll have to check them out… Yeah, I agree with you about Misfits/Samhain. That’s kind of why I like them more. Lyrically, I find Samhain more interesting. Although I do love horror and monsters and shit. Lol

the Undead was Bobby Steeles band after the Misfits, they're ok at best

Yeah. I just checked them out. They aren’t bad, but like you said they’re just ok.

It's funny that they played at The Continental, that's a roots rock/country joint

It is now. Austin tends to be a bit of a museum to itself these days.

It is, huh? I know nothing about the place. That’s quite the departure from the regular then. Lol

I saw Samhain twice in NYC. The first time was at Danceteria and then again a year later at The Ritz. During their encore, they came out covered in fake blood, just like the cover of the Initium album. I was standing in front of the stage and got some of it on me during Archangel. The train ride home covered in blood made for an interesting evening.

So_Do_You_Like_Stuff OP t1_it7pmxr wrote

Nice… Yeah, I’m sure that was a fun ride back. Hopefully you didn’t get too many strange looks.

I love Samhain, but unfortunately, some of the recordings are less than stellar. Not that I think the productions should have been super polished, but I wish they had the means to record slightly higher-quality albums. That's a minor quibble though, as the songs themselves are super dark and super catchy. Style-wise, for me, they were a perfect middle ground between Misfits and Danzig.

So_Do_You_Like_Stuff OP t1_it7q68y wrote

Indeed. The recording quality is a little off on some of their records, and I do wish they would re-master them. I don’t want super polished, over-produced though.

The vocals are really low on the recordings, especially on Initium.

That album sounds like a demo they recorded in the Blair Witches basement. Love it though!

AlucardII t1_it8bbyb wrote

Basically, yeah. The "samh" part is "sow," as in a female pig (not as in sowing seeds), and the "ain" part can be pronounced as "in" or "an." It should really be "an" but it's unstressed, so may be softened to "in."

As a native irish speaker this is how I say it. Although until right now I did not know a band of this name existed.
