They were indeed smart and interesting and wonderful. Sadly also very traumatised from the war in their own ways, since they experienced most of it on opposite ends of the world. Sharing details about their early years was not easy for them. I’ve been piecing it together over the years from what they told me and what my dad has been able to tell me.
I’d put it all together and write the book if it didn’t feel a little weird writing about my own grandparents.

I think being taciturn is very common among WWII veterans and survivors. I respect that, but I hate that it means their stories will be lost. Maybe if you think of it as preserving their story instead of writing a book about them, it will make it feel less awkward.
