She might have been strong, but there is a trick to ripping big phone books. You bend the spine and rip in the direction of the bend. Not too hard after some tries.

She looks like a little girls head on a full grown adults head. I know I can't do that though!

she looks like fuckin she hulk! no doubt she’s shredded, but ripping a phone book is about technique and not really strength. could’ve displayed her doing literally anything else.

Ripping apart a phone book is more about technique than brute strength.

The trick is to put the book in a owen at 50-75 celcius for an hour. Looks the same but now it’s fragile.

This is actually pretty easy if you know the trick. I'm a relatively scrawny dude and I can manage it.

Where the hell can we find a phone book to try this out?

There’s a MUCH easier way 😂 you just take the book and scrunch it together just enough to separate all of the pages then you rip it in half. Scrunching it like this makes it so that your really only tearing one page at a time

I thinking she’s great… not at all intimidating just in great shape living that best life. My whole life I’ve been raised by or partners with strong women. And I respect them… probably more than they know

Serious question:

Were there gyms or did people have weights at home? I don’t know anything about this era but I would assume it was a very… woman cook and clean and the man goes out to work and comes home sort of deal.

Would a female bodybuilder be very taboo or am I totally off base?

She’s probably pretty young here, and perhaps was an entertainer.* But most people wouldn’t have gotten too worked up about it. The 30s weren’t all that buttoned down.

*Google says yes; she was a stunt performer in the movies. And she began to develop her physique while using exercise to help recover from terrible burns as a child.

For all those geniuses who say it's easy if you fan the pages. Zoom in. She didn't.

There's actually an easy way of ripping thick books like phones books. I've done it myself a bunch of times. All in the technique.

Axolotlist t1_iy2rfqg wrote

Yup. I used to be able to rip really thick ones in half. It's all in the technique. Looks impressive as hell though. One thing no one can rip apart though, is two phone books with the pages interleaved. I think myth busters tried that once.

Had to do a double take. I thought she was casting off the last vestiges of traditional garb by literally ripping a skirt away as it was being worn. Even with the point-of-force mechanics, ripping one of those books is impressive, though.
