I had to sell my NES and all my games and peripherals to get the SNES. My Mom wouldnt buy it for me even as a combo present. "You already have one!" she said.

4

Not_MrNice t1_j21kxuf wrote

There's a famous news clips where they asked a mom at a toy store if she'd buy her kid and SNES and she said something like "No. And I'm going to explain to him how companies market things to make you buy them"

I always felt bad for her kid. That's not how it works. That sucks that you missed out.

2

Add1kt t1_j21n0i5 wrote

I doubt my mother did it intentionally. But the experience taught me that sometimes you have to sacrifice to get what you want. And that I had agency to go and get what I want if I accept the cost.

In hindsight, I didnt really miss out. I beat all my NES games. I didnt need to hold on to it.

2

dnz000 t1_j222c58 wrote

That was a real thing, probably pushed by Rush Limbaugh. Same reason I lost my super soaker 50. If you had parents that considered console upgrades in the 90s you were lucky. People used to freak that you needed to buy new games for new consoles.

I got myself a superNES emulator to relive exactly this feeling. The part im struggling with is how did I ever consider this entertaining? 3

ShippingUpTo_Salem t1_j21yc4u wrote
