Popular tinted glasses for blind people in the 1800s. He's not dead and it's not modern. Edit: well, he wasn't dead then.

Cool photo. Probably a tin type? Nothing is out of place for this to be from the 1850s. The waistcoat would have been very colourful. The glasses could have been red, pink, green, blue or other. But if they are black then the guy was blind.

People with eye problems typically wore sunglasses back then. It was common for blind people to wear sunglasses.
