Hi, nuclear engineer here. Your concerns are not based on science and fact. Even counting the nuclear issues you listed, the number of deaths per kWh. Source: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/rates-for-each-energy-source-in-deaths-per-billion-kWh-produced-Source-Updated_tbl2_272406182 (although based on your other opinions I don’t know that a scientific article will have much bearing to change your mind).

Also, you’ll hate Pittsburgh if you are against the “tyranny” of vaccination, masking, and lockdowns(although there are many people who probably think like you out in the other parts of the state). Additionally, with the fracking that occurs in Pennsylvania, there is still chance for water contamination and pollution.

I'm not only talking about the COVID vaccine either. I was nearly suspended from public middle school in 2002 because my mom forgot to submit proof of my chicken pox vaccine.

I have my COVID vaccine and booster so it doesn't faze me if employers require it to enter the premises. I am merely commenting on the amount of job listings I saw last time I was job hunting that required the COVID vaccine among other things.

Boyfriend is teaching at a private school and they required his vaccination records as well.

Interesting point. Would most Amish agree to take a Covid test or visit a modern doctor if they were sick though?

My impression was they prefer to rely on prayer and home remedies over modern medicine. If so, its unlikely all their cases got reported.

I'm a bit skeptical, but maybe there's something to it. The Amish are a rather insular community. I wouldn't be surprised if they had differences in immune system from the average American because of their tendency to marry inside their community, keep livestock, and rely less on modern healthcare.

Studies have shown there are immune system related drawbacks to living in a largely sterile environment without frequent exposure to animals. Higher risk of allergies for example. There are other coronaviruses which pre-date Covid too. Maybe that lifestyle is just more likely to lead to similar exposures and natural immunity.

3

Shad0wSmurf t1_ja22e4f wrote

Interesting, I have not gotten covid, or gotten the shots or boosters. I been acting like it's any other day and never got sick, only people I know that got sick got sick, multiple times, after they got the vaccine. I still haven't gotten it.

To each their own, but no, PA still has its religious exemption for vaccination in schools, no questions asked, no one really bothers about it from the districts I've been in

So a few things you seem to be concerned about.

First. Nuclear power is safer than other forms of power. Chernobyl was the last one that really endangered a significant amount of people. But that was soviet Russia. Three mile island is in PA and had similar issues but didn't endanger people to the same extent. You'll be fine.

Second. You'd have to check the ordinances of whatever borough or township you move into whether you can have septic and well, you must likely can.

Third. Crime. I know the trending narrative is that big cities are outliers for the amount of crime that's happening but honestly, being in rural PA you're more likely to be the victim of a crime but most crimes go unreported. I've found PSP to be really bad at calling murders, murder. At least when they don't care about the victim. New York is probably about as safe as the area of PA you're moving to.

Now, you're "tyranny" bit won't get you a lot of love here But you'd probably fit in well in this area.
Big Trump zone. Bunch of excess deaths from covid. Bunch of small people in jail for January 6 stuff

You're wrong but you won't think that if you live in the Berwick outlying areas.

49

brandondsantos t1_ja1lq6v wrote

Three Mile Island has been shut down since 2019. It poses no risk and never has to the general public.

All of the nuclear plants are safely monitored and have emergency planning zones in case shit does hit the fan (which it almost never does)

Also, coal plants in the western part of the state are the real dangers. Nuclear just emits harmless steam, coal is a whole different story.

I could go all day talking about this stuff, but you're better off staying wherever you see yourself comfortable.

42

IamSauerKraut t1_ja4jrex wrote

I totally understand wanting to be self sufficient in the modern world; it’s scary to be reliant on a system which could easily collapse. Pennsylvania is also an amazingly beautiful state, with plenty of virgin forests, vistas, and all of the natural wonders you could ask for. There are so many benefits from enjoying the outdoors in PA. When I was a camp counselor in the Poconos, I spent my only two hours off I was allowed a day hiking around the lakes and that was enough to calm any anxiety or stress from my day.

Berwick may be a fairly rural and conservative area but Pennsylvania becomes bluer and bluer with each election cycle, so the majority of the population aside from the typical rural dissenters are supportive of vaccines and harm reducing health policies. If this is going to be a problem, PA might not be the place for you.

I live in Pittsburgh during the school year and it’s quite a liberal city. A majority of spas, gyms, venues, etc, require vaccines and are supportive. Most people here are also vehemently anti-MAGA and “tyranny talk”, especially because a lot of Pittsburgh transplants moved here to escape that kind of hate and behavior. You’ll be perfectly fine near the nuclear power plant. The stuff coming out of the cooling towers is just water vapor. The cooling towers are just there to cool water. That water is in a separate loop from the reactor so there’s no radioactivity. In the minuscule chance that something has the potential to go wrong, sirens will sound in a 10 mile radius around the plant to signal you to tune to a local radio/TV station for information and instructions. The sirens are NOT telling you to immediately evacuate.

For others reading this moronic screed...nuke plants don't emit smoke, its water vapor, from the heated water. We've lived down wind of Limerick NPP since June 2000, you can see the vapor plume on most clear days. I actually know people that live in a very expensive development right in the shadow of the two towers. I've coached kids in lacrosse in fields located less than 1/4 of a mile away. Lots of farms (corn, wheat, dairy) all around here. Oddly enough there are no 3-eyed fish in our streams or double headed deer roaming around. In fact, the biggest health threat around here was about 15-20 years ago when two separate tubing plants, fortunately both down wind of us, were illegally emitting carcinogens. Turns out, surprise surprise, the owners were both big Republican donors. GWB even made a campaign stop at one of them. There is the tyranny the OP is looking for.

As for the terrorism threat. Nothing is 100% safe but each nuke power plant has its own security force. I was actually recruited by one of them when I was getting out of the Army. And I'll let structural design engineers speak to this but the towers are designed to withstand an impact from a 747.

In regards to safety, there have been 3 major nuclear power plant incidents since 1979...3MI, which was an equipment failure, Chernobyl was caused by human error, and Fukishima was an earthquake. 3MI has no confirmed death or health incidents related to it, Fukishima has had one, and Chernobyl 31. Now consider the cumulative cost of lives from the pollutants emitted from the fossil fuel industry, the cumulative illnesses, the cumulative ecological disasters, and so on.

The OP is grossly misinformed on nuke power, or (could be both) an open vessel for disinformation, or is purposely trying to spread disinformation.

Anyway, move to Florida bud, you're people are there and awaiting you.
