Submitted by desirizzle21 t3_10ycaq6 in Pennsylvania

My single 35yo brother got a big promotion and is moving out of state for the first time next month. PA is quite the change from Houston, TX where we are from and he would like some help deciding between Kingston, Scranton, Wilkes Barre, and Dallas. He is mostly interested in living somewhere safe with people aged 30+, decent nightlife, and outdoor activities. He will be driving to Exeter, PA for work. He will probably get a dog at some point too if that matters.

Any tips and opinions are appreciated!

EDIT: As someone mentioned he will be working in the Exeter borough in NEPA, NOT the Exeter township closer to Philly.

If he wants to be super close to work, Wyoming and West Wyoming are great. There is a nice wall along the river that he can take the dog too. I'd avoid West Pittston. Its beautiful, but like 90% of the town in a flood zone. Of the Kingston area, I like Swoyersville best. Dallas area is very pretty. I'm assuming that his jobs is at the vehicle parts distributer that starts with a K. Just note that the closest highway ramp is 18-20 minutes from there, so the it can be a pain in the butt sometimes to get there from Scranton.

Thanks! I’m actually not sure where exactly he works but now I’m curious lol, I’ll ask him tomorrow. Sounds like you might be correct.

We were in Honesdale last week looking, very nice little town but might be too long a ride to Exeter.

Scranton is the biggest city of all of these and probably has the most to do. I think it’s the fifth largest city in the state.

It fell down to 7th. Allentown grew immensely in the past 20 years and is now number 3. Upper Darby is bigger now since Scranton has been losing people.

I'm in Pittston - they've done a great job on our Main Street. We've lived here for 26 years and like it a lot...

Dallas is the better town but WB may be more affordable.

Out of the bunch, Scranton seems like the best bet.

Conshohocken if that's close enough. Some nightlife, safe inexpensive, attractive, adjacent to xway, 30mins to downtown philly...

Exeter is a borough in the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre area; totally different than the Exeter Township, near Reading

Oh I see, I totally got the locations confused! 2 hours away is a huge difference. Thanks for catching that.

To make things even more confusing, there's both an Exeter Borough AND Exeter Township in Luzerne County.

Mmm looks like It’s about a 50 minute drive one way give or take…might be a little too far but I’ll run it by him!

That's closer to two hours.

Crime in Wilkes Barre is probably the highest of the cities you listed. Kingston is across the river from Wilkes Barre. Both will have typical small city nightlife.

Dallas is a suburban area, has a fair amount of restaurants and bars and probably the safest one you mentioned.

Scranton is also a typical small city. Has its good areas and bad.

As far as outdoorsy stuff, you can live anywhere in NEPA and find something to do within a pretty short drive. Hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, mountain biking, and if he likes winter activities, skiing, snowshoeing.

Conshie is just outside of Philly! A bit more than 50 minutes last time I drove down 476. More like 2 hours.

edit: My bad - apparently there's two Exeter's on that side of the state. I was familiar with the other one of them. In my defense the other Exeter his 5x bigger in both area and population so I had an 80% chance of being right.

Those NEPA towns are 2+ hours from Exeter in non-rush-hour traffic. It's not like Texas where there's cities separated by flat empty space. He'd have to cross a whole mountain range and go around two not-big-but-big-enough-to-have-major-rush-hour-traffic cities. Please consider somewhere between Reading and Philly or he'll be driving 6 hours a day.
