I’ve worked with small business owners who act like this. They come off as stubborn and out of touch, and are usually always shedding employees.

Pretty confidant that’s a joke. This whole event is weird. They’re offended by “the Caucasian”? Have they never seen The Big Lebowski?

I’m not here to defend the business owner, he’s probably a douche. But they’re walking out over “the Caucasian”?

I’m just saying it’s weird to be offended and walk out over “the Caucasian”. I’m sure there are plenty of things to complain about there being a service industry job - they probably get paid shit wages. Walk out over that.

Whatever this was or wasn’t about, the owner chose to literally close his business over listening to his employees about something relatively minor. It speaks volumes, really.

I see it as who had what to lose. Agree with the employees or not, they were willing to lose their jobs over this. Any manager/owner not fully up their own ass would take that as a wake up call.

Word is staff left due to hostile work environment and sexual harassment. The drink was just the last straw.

The way I look at it is that there are many terms that I, personally, am not offended by. However, I recognize that these terms are offensive to some people. Therefore, I don't use them. Sometimes, I find out that people are offended by something that I did not realize was offensive. In those cases, I admit my ignorance and refrain from using the term again.

My point is that it really doesn't matter what the word or phrase is. It's my responsibility as a member of an evolving, civil society to learn and adjust my behavior accordingly.

I'm sure they would have been a lot more tolerant of a joke if the servers at the place was actually making any money

Lots of places cannot find workers, especially in the restaurant/bar field. The folks who walked out should have no problem finding a new job, but will this jerk find folks willing to work for him?

flaaaacid t1_jbf7f0e wrote

Right. However dumb he thought this issue was, he could have renamed the drink, rolled his eyes, and continued on. Instead he’s got a closed business for several days, a story in the paper that makes him look like an ass, and probably expiring product because the business was closed. Losses on losses on losses. But hey the libs were owned I guess.

zerobot t1_jbf8zs6 wrote

This whole thing sounds so stupid to be honest. I mean, if the claim that he wanted to name a drink “the negro” the following week then I don’t think that would be appropriate but losing their mind over a drink called “the Caucasian?” I mean come on. We have a drink called a White Russian. What exactly is the problem here that they wanted to walk out over a drink called “The Caucasian” that is basically a White Russian? The owner also could have his renamed it something else. All sides here just sound stupid.

givemewhiskeypls t1_jbfc7na wrote

I’m not trying to be inflammatory, but can someone explain what is offensive about the name “the caucasian”? His follow up about “the negro”, which I take as an off-color joke, is obviously still over a line whether he meant it or not. But, if it’s a White Russian, it seems obvious it’s a play on the Caucasian mountains or the Caucasus. What’s the issue?

My point is that the word doesn't matter. It could be anything. If it's offensive to someone then you can either be a normal member of society and stop offending people or you can demand that society conform to your own particular standards. We have a name for people like that and it's not a nice one.

A good example is the Washington Redskins. That name wasn't offensive to most of the fans of the team or of football, in general. But it was offensive to some people. Dan Snyder didn't care at all about those people, so he didn't change the name until he was publicly shamed for it.

You certainly have the right to continue to knowingly offend people, but understand that most people do not like people who go around carelessly throwing around offensive terms. I certainly do not and will avoid them like the plague.

You can feel free to explain why the caucasian is so offensive.

Yes. The privilege of not having to worry about a mixed drink being served for two days called the white person.

This is what people are referring to when they refer to the radical left. Being so upset over a drink called the caucasian that they quit their job. This is insanity.

Sleepy Joe has gotten employment to the level where everyone who wants to work can work. Why are you still not working? Does Hoffman pay you to shitpost in his defense? Do I need to ask your gawd MastriaNO to do an exorcism to get you back into righteousness?

You've done a terrible job assuming who I support politically and what side of the political spectrum I fall on. During this time of unemployment in your life I recommend going back to the drawing board and trying again. I think if I give you a second chance you might be able to figure out exactly what I think of the kinds of people you have come to believe I support.

After that I would recommend you find a job. Maybe you can work at this restaurant. It looks like they are hiring.

Yeah there has to be more to the story and I don't know Lancaster but idk if my old manager would be jumping at the chance to hire someone who walked out over a drink called the caucasian. Not because we use big lebowski jokes in our drink names but because the boh is a ruckus

I’m 45, and The Big Lebowski is one of those movies that are a cult classic and people love it but somehow it snuck by me. I finally saw it but later in life. It was great but it just didn’t make that kind of impression on me.

Think about that for a second and wonder if maybe there's more to the story than just the drink. Who is making the joke and what you know about them tends to factor in quite a bit in how a joke is received so perhaps that has something to do with it.

Aww Gettysburg Times! I used to intern there in the early 2000s. They were a great staff and I'm glad to see the paper is still in business.

Yeah but people were offended that a bar I worked at did a fundraiser for a lgbtq center. I am glad we were assholes and didnt worry about offending those people.

On the other hand one might even say it's offensive to compare a cocktail named caucasian to a nfl team named a racial slur.

It's obvious why things like a slur are offensive. It's not obvious and borderline silly that people found "caucasian" offensive without context.
