So I'm looking to get a PA driver's license and REAL ID. I'm living in philly as a 5th year student but have used my Virginia (home state) ID thus far. However a dog got to that ID and it won't scan anymore. I don't have my SSN card, but I know the number, which I know isn't good enough for the license, but I can't get a clear answer on whether or not I need it for the REAL ID. Also, my passport is expired.

What's the best way to go about getting this all in order? Am I fucked until I renew my passport? Can I get a REAL ID without a SSN card? Do I need a PA license to get a REAL ID?

  1. Apply to get a replacement social security card online here: https://faq.ssa.gov/en-us/Topic/article/KA-02017

  2. Get a passport photo (any Walgreens) then follow these steps to renew your passport through the mail: https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/passports/have-passport/renew.html

  3. Get a replacement driver’s license from VA online here and pay an extra $10 for REAL ID: https://www.dmv.virginia.gov/apps/webtrans/pin_maint/pin_logon.aspx

  4. Now you are caught up and then seek a PA REAL ID.

You are a fifth year student. You can do this.

The only possible addition to this is order a passport card when renewing the passport. Then you don't need to jump through PAs hoops for a realID.

You need the SSN card for REAL ID, full stop. I know because mine in packed away in a box in a storage locker somewhere, and I need it, but it’s my parent’s locker from their old house and it’s big and full of stuff.

What you can do is get a standard license and you can also renew your passport. But REAL ID is not an option until you have your SSN card in hand.

Google what you need for a real id. You need SEVERAL physical documents to get one.
