You didn't inadvertently sign up for anything, this is the new political norm until election day. I've started blocking numbers and I've set my iphone up to route calls from numbers not in my contacts list to my voicemail.

I expect this is heavily influenced by where you live, what typical turnout for that location is, and possibly what party you are registered under. I'm sure they are going to blitz traditionally low-turnout areas.
