TLDR:

State wide survey, mental health of those awaiting trial. Not good. We simply aren’t trained to meet the needs and don’t have enough mental health beds.

More illness.

Fewer resources.

Stressful for inmate and staff.

By design unfortunately. Capitalism = For profit prisons + defunded healthcare across the board.

Capitalism leaves people behind as waste and just expects them to die after they can no longer make a nickel off them.

These are not for profit prisons. They’re regular county prisons run by each individual county.

As long as the only people "put at risk" are the accused criminals (and the majority of them are Not White), the people who have the most power in our governments (Republicons) will think: "all the better, good!"

Infuriatingly enough I had a family member kill themselves in prison. He was schizophrenic and on suicide watch, but apparently not enough watch.
