Is there any penalty for renewing a DL that has been expired for over 6 months? Some online sources say you must retake your driver’s test and other sources say you can just renew at the DMV with no problems. Haven’t been driving much and sort of let it slip my mind. It expired 6 months and 5 days ago

Renew it online so you are legal to drive immediately. PENNDOT will mail you the camera card. Then you take that camera card to the Licensing Center and get the actual photo license. Much easier and faster to just get your picture done then doing the full renewal at the Licensing Center.
where is the licensing center? are they PennDOTT facilities or private business?

My DL was expired for over 5 years and I renewed it without issue. This was back in like 2013. I just went online, entered my info for a renewal, paid the standard fee, and they mailed me a camera card.
The only time that I know of when they give you a hard time is if it expired or was lost due to medical reasons. Then you have to get forms filled out and shit. You should be fine.
Just did this last week. My DL expired in March. I renewed online, got the camera card 2 weeks later and went in, no problems at all in Montgomery co
Mine was a year over, renewed it with no issues at the dmv.
they did ask "how I got there" and I said the bus.

Going to the license center is a nightmare if you go on the day they do testings. They are far away in a lot of areas and many are only open 3 days a week.
