Send them a copy of the letter.

Both myself and the insurance company sent it to them, the DMV is still claiming there was a lapse even though the letter says verbatim "There has been no lapses of coverage during this time".

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say they don't have the resources to even begin to pursue an investigation in this. They're gonna take your word for it once you tell them you didn't drive that day. It's not a murder investigation.

So anyone know exactly why the law was changed a few years ago to force insurance companies to report a lapse in coverage if payment wasn't received exactly on time?

I was wondering why my agency kept calling asking for payment well before the due date, and they told me there was a change in state law that required them to immediately cancel coverage if payment was not received on time (previously, they'd keep a long-standing policy active even if the check was a few days late in the mail).

I'm 100% against uninsured motorists driving around, but before this, the agencies had a little leeway to keep you protected for rare circumstances such as this.

No clue when or why it was changed, it was the first time this ever happened to me. I guess I just assumed there was a grace period which is why I was so confused/surprised when the letter came months later.

Jump through the stupid hoop and state you didn't drive it. This will be the simplest way to resolve. Pretty pitiful they first took the word of the insurance company there was a lapse, and now won't recognize their assertion there was no lapse. Also, pretty pitiful the insurance company sent notification within a single day. Wonder if they'd have backed you if there was a claim that day? Admire your attempt at honesty.

Just send them the letter saying you didn't drive that day. I had to do it a few months back.
