Hi! I know this is random. A friend of mine is stuck in Breezewood for a few days with no car, and I know she is bummed. Is there anything that you would recommend she do or see? Places to eat? Places to go sledding, lol? Some kind of nice company that we could send her a gift box to cheer her up? Anything?

She is missing holidays with family and pretty bummed, so I would love anything to cheer her up. :)

Wow, being stuck in what's essentially a rest stop town with nothing but gas stations, fast-food restaurants and hotels sounds like a really crummy way to spend a regular weekend, let alone a holiday.

The Abandoned Turnpike is right there, but don't think it's anything worth visiting in a sub-0° blizzard.

Don't most Christmas movies like this end up with someone talking the grumpy mechanic into working late on Christmas eve to fix their car in a hurry? ;)

Either that or she meets the love of her life at the family run bed n breakfast that her true love has always worked and they teach her the true meaning of Christmas

That would make an interesting Hallmark Christmas movie -- imagine Breezewood in a Christmas globe lol

I think this is the answer because there is nothing else in Breezewood! 🤷‍♀️

Truth. Breezewood used to be this hopping place a long time ago. There’s absolutely nothing there now. And almost everything that’s there is completely rundown.

My family used to stop there for Arthur Treachers Fish and Chips when driving to Johnstown. I miss those hush puppies

Kneedeep_in_Cyanide t1_j1e8d2w wrote

Not as much as you might think. I don't remember the exact last time we stopped stopping there, but that location was open in the 90s, maybe even the early 2000s.

There is a Bob Evans there that feels like a Cracker Barrel....

There is a difference?

3

craggy_cynic t1_j1c6umw wrote

C'mon, the CB gift shop has a FAR greater supply of homestyle, kitschy items/gift ideas than BE! I truly appreciate your sarcasm, but to say there's no difference is a modest overstatement.

15

dpawaters t1_j1ds7sk wrote

But this specific Breezewood Bob Evans has the whole country store type thing too, as well as what looks like remnants of the porch. Our family was convinced it must have been a Cracker Barrel in the past. If anyone can prove this theory that would be awesome.

Someone in her family needs to suck it up and make the trip to go get her?

You could also arrange for a car service in Harrisburg to pick her up and take her to the destination or at least to Harrisburg where you can get a train or bus.

28

Real_Comfortable3467 t1_j1c3dhz wrote

That's exactly what I was thinking. If your family was worth seeing for Christmas they sure as shit wouldn't leave you stranded in Breezewood for multiple days.

27

IamSauerKraut t1_j1c4osg wrote

This is the one part of the story that makes me think it is made up. Who the hell leaves their loved one in the middle of podunk over Christmas? Was she not going home to visit??

12

It's a long story. Nearest family is 4.5 hrs away... But I agree it's what should happen.

4.5 hours and nobody will go get her??? That's awful. Could she afford to get to Bedford? There are some very nice restaurants and cute downtown area plus there's the Bedford Springs Resort.

I live four miles outside of Breezewood. I can offer (freezing cold, srsly it's supposed to be single digits this weekend) opportunities for sledding followed by home-cooked split pea (with ham) soup or (alternatively, if not a ham-eater) home-cooked noodle soup on xmas day. My house is a wreck but it has a woodstove and DSL and one friendly cat (and another not-friendly cat).

My friend's house is also close by and we will be doing xmas cookies the morning of Saturday the 24th if your friend would like to attend that. There will be home-made cookies at that function.

I am not an axe murderer (lol, that's super non-threatening).

Feel free to PM me if you like.

15

This is the best suggestion. There’s more to do in Bedford. If truly stuck in Breezewood I’d personally stay at the holiday inn. They have a pool and a little gym so could get some exercise. Could walk to Bob Evans from there . Is there still a shady dive bar on Breezewood Rd? Could go there for Christmas Eve drinks .

1

throwaway224 t1_j1hmgqb wrote

The wildwood? Assuming they are still open (not sure, it's not the sort of place I would go) that's still a hell of a walk in like 7 degrees. Better plan: Walk to the Sheetz and get a six of an acceptable Adult Beverage and go back to your hotel room to drink it.

1

One_Awareness6631 t1_j1d7yxe wrote

I suggested this up above somewhere - there's a newish Asian fusion place called Nudl that has amazing food. Or if she could afford to stay a couple nights at Bedford Springs resort, that would make for a decent time.

3

throwaway224 t1_j1hmkp2 wrote

In Bedford, the 10/09 does solid food as well.

1

One_Awareness6631 t1_j1hs7da wrote

Yes!! People underestimate the Bedford food scene. They’ve got much better restaurants than where I am (Altoona—sadly). It’s a shame I’m surrounded by every chain establishment imaginable but have very few independent places.

A Rest Stop Holiday. I feel a Hallmark movie in the works. All we need is a snarky hunk of a mechanic, that turns out to be European royalty. All jokes aside, so sorry for your friend. Not that it's any kind of consolation but being stuck somewhere shitty is truly in the tradition of the Christmas holiday.

No Room at the Inn, that's what I'll call my spec script.

9

wagsman t1_j1bclzo wrote

On the east side of the main stretch past the top of the hill (past gateway plaza going east on 30) there’s the entrance to the old turnpike which a lot of people hike, but it’s going to be cold as hell so I doubt that’s much help.

Where is her family?

I just checked Greyhound because I would have been willing to go to Breezewood to bring her to Altoona to hop on a Greyhound to Erie, but there are no trips available today. I wish I could help. :(

ETA: I just checked Amtrak for a train and the train planned for this evening was canceled. :( Dang it!! It says there are 3 spots left for Christmas Eve train to Erie - if she books it, I will seriously pick her up tomorrow and get her to Altoona train station - but it doesn't look like a fun time bec she wouldn't arrive until 7am Christmas Day.

Her car insurance might have a solution to help her get home safely. She may be able to have the car towed to a shop closer to home. If she has AAA, they'll take it up to 100 miles without a charge. I'm sure it's already in the shop right there, but just in case they haven't started doing the work.

Unfortunately there isn't much more to Breezewood than a short stretch of Route 30 with some gas stations, fast-food/chain restaurants, and a couple gift shops. If she can stand being out in the frigid cold, she can probably walk around and see it all in an hour or two.

You could send her a gift card to Starbucks, maybe?

I live about 10 minutes from breezewood. Breezewood unfortunately is not a great place to enjoy yourself. Bedford and Everett are nice little towns tho, lots of historic places and little shops . There’s a nice wine shop in Bedford, the candy store, and some good food at bad boys bistro/the golden eagle. Both towns are about 10 miles west of her.
