Yes!!! Mine is about ready and the smell has been quite the tease for the last few hrs. Good for any hungover symptoms too and lets me be lazy the whole day hahaha! :)

They look so good! You got a head start on me with the potatoes as I'm skinning mine up right now! Pork is pretty much done though and I'm very excited to eat! Have been sipping water too! Feel pretty great surprisingly and hope you have a good day too :)

Happy 2023!!!

I decided like.. 2 years ago to stop peeling my potatoes and never looked back.

we eat the skins here in this house. I also read that boiling potatoes with the skins on helps avoid the water getting absorbed & making the tatos mushy.

Obviously all up to independent taste but it’s cut so much time down on cooking for me.

Happy 2023!! Enjoy all of your delicious food friend. May it be a good one

Not sure where it came from but we always did kielbasa, not pork roast. But either way, it's in the crock pot now!

Canceled our NYD feast with family and friends because my wife got sick yesterday. Must have been a 24hr bug because she woke up craving pork roast, MPG and my homemade sauerkraut. It's back on for just the two of us. Puff pastry dough is chilling for the baked Apple Roses.

Ours too. Getting ready to put it in now!

Had ours too! Wonderful tradition. Want more sauerkraut but I'm full 👀

I wish we had sauerkraut but my wife prefers to make red cabbage.

I swear to god I'm the only Pennsylvanian who can't deal with this shit. My family has made kraut since I was born (and earlier, naturally) and it's always just made me retch. The stench of it alone makes me want to not even be in the house, and the way you can leave the house then walk inside and get hit by the wall of odor hitting you full in the face instantly is just awful.

I refuse to even try it from the smell alone, I don't know how anyone can actually find the stink appealing as is...

There are two of us! The smell of sauerkraut makes me gag and retch as well, and I take that as a sign that nature is telling me not to put it near my mouth (though with my colitis I couldn't eat it even if I wanted to). At least I'm sick and can't eat today so I have an excuse!

New Year’s and Thanksgiving probably are the only two holidays that a majority of the population has pretty much the exact same meal across PA.

Only other potential honorable mentions that I can think of would maybe be July 4th with hot dogs and Christmas with ham but those might barely cross the 50% threshold.

It definitely tastes better than it smells. I do understand where you're coming from tho; I hate the smell of melted cheese which makes me need to leave the house whenever my wife cooks with it

The best part is if you make a a lot, you have it for days. It gets better if reheated in the crock pot a day or 2 later, when that Sauerkraut gets caramelized magic happens.

A question I have is how do you all like it better.

  1. Potatoes chucked up and cooked in it together.
  2. Potatoes mashed and cooked separately.

Also who likes it with Granny Smith Apples.

This is a New Year’s Day tradition in our family as well - we have some PA Dutch roots. It was always explained to me Turkey on Christmas because turkeys scratch backwards and pork on New Years because pigs root forward.

Actually cooked mine yesterday. On meal 4 of pork and sauerkraut.

This is a long standing Eastern European tradition that prevents the babbayaga from coming to your home and eating your money.

Delicious though.

I don’t think anybody finds the smell appealing so to say. The good taste outweighs the bad smell. And once you acquire a taste for it the smell might actually make your mouth water a bit.

I make it New Year’s Eve. Then you can eat it right before and right after the new year, first and last thing eaten. Then the next day you eat it for dinner because who wants to cook after being up all night. It’s better then too with all the juices marinating all day. That’s my method and not approved by previous generations of my family,

Anyone have a great recipe to share? I'm a transplant from NY who loves sauerkraut and would love to be able to join in on this tradition

toolatetobeoriginal OP t1_j2kplag wrote

Mines a lot depending on portion size.

This is like 4-5 center cut pork chops. 2 bags of kraut, and 1 bag of yellow potatoes.

I season and sear the pork chop on each side. My seasoning is paprika and pepper.

Add a bag of sauerkraut, pork chops, diced red apple, and then another bag of kraut. I’ll add about a half table spoon to a tablespoon in the crock pot.

Mashed potatoes, skins on, boil- mash. add salt, pepper, butter, nonfat Greek yogurt, and a dash of almond milk.

I never got the tradition, but fuck is it so good.

LilDutchy t1_j2l85va wrote

I still had frozen leftover pork and kraut from last year so I thawed and reheated that and made home made mashed potatoes. Here’s to hoping leftovers are luckier than fresh.

2

toolatetobeoriginal OP t1_j2lbn8o wrote

I think it’s because pigs go forward. So you wouldn’t want to eat a chicken because it scratches back.

For the kraut.. my mom always just said it’s to clean your colon to leave that old shit behind you in the last year 😅

Looks delicious! I will need to make this for my New Years Dinner and/or get some kielbasa with the sauerkraut.
