We had a discussion at work today about holidays on our international teams that are only celebrated by certain parts of their country. For example, Louis Riel Day is a public holiday in Canada, but only for the Manitoba province.
Are there any PA-regional holidays that are still currently celebrated?
When I went to college and told people we had that they off school nobody believed me. 🤦🏻♂️
Came here to say this. We still get this day off even though the opening day has moved. I stopped hunting years ago and it is sleeping in til it hurts day now.
Definitely! Growing up everyone referred to it as, “Deer Lonely Ladies Day.”

Seems to, we always have that day off of school but go to school on other holidays like Veterans Day! The funny thing is they haven’t adjusted it for the new opening day so it’s likely been forgotten why we have the Monday after Thanksgiving off. I’ll still take it though!

I'd say Groundhogs day which is coming up here. Although at this point it's well known and being duplicated many places. It's specifically a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition.
Fastnacht day is another PA Dutch one.
And also how faschnaut is spelled. (How I knew it)
I only just started seeing it with a t, your spelling, which is weird to me. fasnacht I've seen at the local church, but I believe the old PA dutch is faasnacht or something like that.
The problem is PA Dutch never had a spelling oversight or authority of sorts. No websters dictionary. If you look up old books, newspapers, etc.. you will find the same words spelled at least five different ways. I say pick your favorite and go with it! 😂
Oh yes, this I've learned over the years. Even if you Google Saint Cecilia's fasnacht , people spell it different ways. I don't even remember how they spell it on their sign, been too many years.
Groundhog day is celebrated in the US and Canada so I wouldn't say its regional to PA.

I work at a company that splits customer service between the Pittsburgh office and a New England office. Their building would have off every year on Patriot Day and we weren't allowed to schedule time off that day because we would have to pick up their slack. I never even heard of Patriot Day until this. We would all complain and say we should get off for Whiskey Rebellion Day. (I know, it doesn't exist.....yet)
When I lived in Schuylkill County as a kid Fastnacht Day was kind of a big deal (the day before Ash Wednesday). We'd get a plain donut with maple syrup for dipping with school lunch!
My kids get “Dutch baby” at school that day. It’s a pancake/waffle sort of thing.

Basically the answer is no at according to these comments, at least not as truly stand alone state holidays. Fastnacht is still Mardi Gras or Fat Tuesday, a different celebration but for the same reason and on the same day. Groundhog Day is celebrated in elementary schools nationwide and a whole blockbuster movie exists based on it. First day of hunting season is, as mentioned, a day off school in many other rural locations. Flag Day is a federal holiday, as are all the holidays listed on the state website as state holidays.

When I worked for the city of Philadelphia in the early 90’s we had flag day off as a paid holiday.
There are five days designated in state law as school holidays in Pennsylvania.
Then there are “local holidays” that are set by each school board for that school district (school district sizes vary greatly). These local holidays will typically vary based on the composition of the student body. Most of the time though, these are holidays known and celebrated outside of Pennsylvania.
