Looking at that list, pizza strips and american chop suey don't deserve to be anywhere near some of the garbage in there.

GotenRocko t1_j7elo15 wrote

American chop suey is apparently good enough, or I guess bad enough, to be on the list twice.

10

frustratedmachinist t1_j7fgpir wrote

I don’t understand how American chop suey and pizza strips are on this in all honesty. The worst I’ve had of both of these are still a ton better than some of the atrocities I’ve seen come out of the Mid West. Lutefisk? Potato salad with raisins? Ambrosia salad? Jello molds or anything with aspic?!

Vaublode t1_j7e6x51 wrote

I refuse to give credit to any list where they’re comparing pizza strips to fried spiders. Fine fucking line I draw there

70

kendo31 t1_j7gyeio wrote

That's a very broad line actually and the pizza is delicious so the list can die. Ignore!

Nevvermind183 t1_j7dtp7p wrote

Bullshit. Also, how can anyone not like American chop suey?? It’s pasta with meat.

63

Nevvermind183 t1_j7fumvy wrote

Pasta with red sauce and meat and maybe peppers and onions? What’s the problem? It’s pretty basic and nothing crazy

8

_Magic_Turtle_ t1_j7fd0jm wrote

Wait, people like American chop suey? I thought everyone's mom just had the same bad cookbook from the 80s...

7

wafflesandgin t1_j7fv7l9 wrote

American chop suey is the "I have to feed multiple children on a limited budget" dish. I ate so much growing up that I yuck at the thought as an adult.

I have the same reaction to beef stew but that was because my mom would overcook it and the veggies all turned to mush.

artaintfree t1_j7fuiat wrote

Oh, call it bolognese and it’s gourmet all of a sudden

For me, green peppers overpower a lot of things. This is one of them.

I like them raw, sometimes. Sausage and peppers works.

Pasta + meat = one of the best things

Pasta + meat + diced green peppers = not so much

I wonder if this is the reason anyone other than me doesn't dig on ACS.

I'm insulted pizza strips are even on the same list as a tuna casserole.

Ikr?! Gak! 🤢

... whereas, chocolate covered bacon, I'd try

8

WafflesTheBadger t1_j7e6l2n wrote

I'm offended that Chocolate-Covered Bacon is on here because 1. I've only ever had it at an authentic Austrian restaurant and 2. It's delicious

Also I'm from Pennsylvania originally and that food is WAAAY worse. Scrapple. Altoona-style Pizza. How did those not make the list?!

30

BernedTendies t1_j7ejmfc wrote

Hey, don’t you say that about scrapple! Lol

Every time I go home for the holidays I try to come back with a brick of that stuff. My fiancé will leave the kitchen if I’m cooking that or pork roll. Her loss 🤷‍♀️

They’re good dipped in ranch (it’s been over ten years since I consumed some but I remember them being deep fried and dipped in ranch)

They used to have them at stickyfingers, i think with bbq

3

Accomplished-Pen-394 t1_j7ej8c5 wrote

I last had them in Eastern Colorado (it’s very Midwest there in culture or at least was back then.) Not sure how they would be in bbq sauce but I probably won’t find out (tomato allergy)

Rocky mountain oysters are totally fine. Don't see what the problems is other than the "yuck" factor.

Chicken riggies or Utica riggies is an Italian-American pasta dish native to the Utica-Rome area of New York State.[1][2] Although many variations exist, it is a pasta-based dish typically consisting of chicken, rigatoni, and hot or sweet peppers in a spicy cream and tomato sauce.

Who would hate that??? (Minus the lactose intolerant)

Why is American Goulash on that list? That’s comfort food for me. Also, American Chop Suey and Goulash are the same thing.

SirIsaacGnuton t1_j7fsclm wrote

Pizza Strips are good if you get them from the right Italian bakery. Not pizza at all though. It's a good focaccia type crust with a tangy red sauce. You can taste the olive oil on the slightly crunchy crust. My nephews live in upstate New York and when they come to visit Rhode Island they buy boxes of strips to take home and bring to school to sell to their classmates. The kids in New York are wild over them which is saying something because New York has decent pizza. After holidays their friends approach them to find out if they visited Rhode Island so they can get to the strips before they're gone.

The caveat is that there are some absolutely dreadful examples of pizza strips in Rhode Island. You have to find the right bakery or don't bother.

Musk Stick, Deviled Kidneys, Fried Spider, and Bake & Shark perhaps belong here... But I've had some good-ass tuna casserole, American chop suey, and choco-bacon.

i will say pizza strips do come in tiers. some are excellent, some are dry and not great.

i think god tier are the "pizza chips" that are the same concept just crispier and round. depetrillos. find me any person that can deny the addictiveness!! find me one!

I prefer mine without the peppers and onions (I’ll sub flakes and powder) but American Chop Suey is such a solid, inoffensive meal. I have no idea why it would be listed

Interesting to see no. 39 Musk Stick here -- I'm on my cell and can't make out the flag but it's probably Australia or maybe New Zealand.

I only learned recently (on a fragrance sub) that it's common to use musk as a flavoring there -- like the same musk as The Body Shop White Musk, or Jovan. As food flavoring for kids sweets. Huh.

r0k0v t1_j7glfbf wrote

Some people really hate Pizza Strips and these people are wrong. Like I understand not liking something but some people get offended by them like you insulted their mother.

A lot of this hate I think come from what people expect from the word Pizza. All the haters say “it’s not pizza”. Now most of these people do like “normal” pizza. So at some level they like bread, and they like sauce, they just don’t like the combination of just the two. There are some who would think differently of pizza strips if they were called “sauced Foccacia” . Even more people would like the taste of the sauce and the crust separately but the combo does weird things to their brain . It’s especially strange considering that the sauce on a quality pizza strip is typically vastly more flavorful than that of a “Normal” pizza.

People say pizza strips aren’t pizza and I would say that this is both biased and historically inaccurate…Pizza strips have more pizza heritage than a lot of what we Americans pass off as Pizza. Pizza comes from the Naples region. Southern Italy is/was poor and does not have much of a dairy industry. Pizza strips are a practical implementation of pizza given available resources. Not having cheese is a feature (not a bug) so it has a better texture when cold and is significantly cheaper.
