Over last couple months I think a few women have been found in ponds / lakes, with minimal news shared. Burrville most recently (they IDd the person), Coventry back in Dec that they noted as suspicious, and I thought at least one or two prior.

So how does this person know about it, and if it’s kept off the news to try to track the killer, why would they post about it?

While unlikely, crazier things are happening these days. Let’s hope it’s not true. I’m keeping some pocket quahogs as self defense

This is a very important tip because you learn not to trust whoever shared this uncritically in the first place because they're an idiot.

edit to add: not a dig at u/Ryv0n at all. The blind sharing without at least trying to verify some of it is the problem, not asking "I've seen this a couple times. anyone know more?"

This is absolutely bullshit. However, staying safe is always advisable. Message is great, method of delivery is awful.

gusterfell t1_j7q2q6r wrote

Generally if they're trying to track someone, they try to get the news out as much as possible. They want everyone in the area on the lookout for the person.

Keeping it off the news just makes it easier for the suspect to hide.

LOL serial killers are so passé, all about mass shootings these days and little Rhody does not have either presently.

I feel like this is related to the two bodies pulled from ponds recently. As far as I understand, they are not connected.

In Burillville, it was pretty clearly an accident. The one in Coventry was announced as and being investigated as a homicide. There hasn't been much in the way of followup since that announcement but that's fairly normal for a murder investigation that doesn't have developments.

I mostly blame "true crime culture" but it's kinda nuts how people love to presume the serial killers. Grifters will outright profit off of pushing this bullshit that requires either:

A) the cops to be so stupid they're missing repeated signs of foul play that some jackass with a podcast is finding. It's certainly not impossible but one side of the equation has training, experience, access to the evidence and zero motivation to pretend there isn't a crime.

Or....

B) They notice it and, for reasons more insane than any serial killer in history, decided to pretend it isn't a thing with the public. Police aren't really in the business of downplaying or minimizing crime. More crime makes it easier to say that not only is their current budget. staffing, and equipment necessary but they probably need more. Beyond that, it's just intentionally risking the public safety to not warn people. Even if that did somehow make it easier to catch someone (it doesn't), the risk that more people get hurt isn't worth it.

But instead we'll have people who push that Smiley Face Killer bullshit selling ads on their website, doing podcast reads and even getting paid for TV specials to push this bullshit because, at the end of the day, all this is about for the source is entertainment and profiteering. Nobody gives a shit about the real person who died.

So I have seen people SPECULATE about this after more than one body was found in a lake. People are suspicious that not much info has been released so they think there is a serial killer loose and police don’t want to tip them off. Take that for what you will

I perfectly understand dude dw. My fist instinct upon seeing the post was to try and dig up some sources but nothing came up. Then I tried to track the post down back to the original owner but all responses were “I just screen shotted it idk.” Goes to show how little it takes to convince people these days.

More of the insane shit people post on facebook/whatsapp to scare people. Like the "if you see this on your car door handle, run away because someone is going to kidnap you" kind of nonsense. RI in 2023 is one of the safest places you could be living in all of human history, but the right wing in particular loves this kind of fear-mongering

Typically an active serial killer is a huge media story the second the police realize that's what it is. Boston Strangler, Son of Sam, Ted Cruz, the Nightstalker, etc.

And the ones that flew below the radar relied on people not finding bodies because it's really hard to make a murder look like something other than murder.

TheApeken t1_j7r0r4p wrote

I think you also have to share this with five people or the killer will show up in your room tonight

Ted Cruz murdered five known victims in the San Francisco Bay Area between December 1968 and October 1969, operating in rural, urban and suburban settings. He targeted young couples and a lone male cab driver. His known attacks took place in Benicia, Vallejo, unincorporated Napa County, and the city of San Francisco proper. Two of his wounded victims survived. Mr. Cruz claimed to have murdered 37 victims. He has been linked to several other cold cases, some in Southern California or outside the state.

Cruz sent a series of taunting letters and cards that he mailed to regional newspapers, in which he threatened killing sprees and bombings if they were not printed. Some of the letters included cryptograms, or ciphers, in which the killer claimed that he was collecting his victims as slaves for the afterlife. Of the four ciphers he produced, two remain unsolved, and one was cracked only in 2020.

If someone tried to vaguebook and ask about this, there'd be like 5-10 comments that would be people asking for an explanation of what the post was referring to.

Meanwhile, of the hundreds of people (if not more) who see this post, the majority are going to see a lot of very sensible comments dismissing the original claim with some simple logic.

You are absolutely correct. A woman was found in Carbuncle Pond in Coventry that police did determine was a homicide. And then a woman was found in Round Top Pond in Burrillville, partially submerged, and it was determined she had fallen in because she tried to walk on ice that was much too thin. She was a psychologist, and hunters found her, and there was absolutely no foul play suspected.

This is complete BS.

There is an older man driving a older black jeep Cherokee following my wife at her job near the cranston/johnston line. He stalks her almost everyday. He follows her to the gas station and pretends he's just getting gas. My wife works at a state run facility and the dude was in the parking lot pretending to clean his car today. When i seen something about a possible killer I was drawn into looking further about it. Legit or not people go missing everyday. I will be going there tomorrow. Be safe people
