Good, people drive absolutely insane on both those roads

People drive recklessly over there so naturally we want to enforce the traffic laws over there to reduce that kind of behavior. But of course reddit still has to be like "hrm iS It qUOtA tIMe??"

The lane merge leading into West Shore Rd off of Hoxie has to be the closest I'll ever get to an IRL thunder dome.

I've almost been ran off the road and forced into the breakdown lane for at least a couple hundred feet a few times in the past because yet another jackass F150 refuses to let me merge in front of them, even after following all protocol for a zipper merge. I'm never not shocked at the sheer, aggressive stupidity that that intersection brings out in people.

hcwhitewolf t1_j9qzytl wrote

To be fair, that merge is stupid and half the people in the left lane are turning into the Walgreens which just further fucks everything up.

Whenever I go through there I just let the person go. Who cares, not worth damaging my car over my ego.

Between the walgreens and the dunks it's up there as one of the worst possible layouts that could've been implemented there. I'm so glad to know the dunks isn't going to be there for long though once they move next door.

Saved the tailgating truck behind me this morning from getting a speeding ticket by seeing the cop two miles ahead and driving the speed limit.

Except nobody obeys the actual speed limit, so it becomes a game of officer discretion

All our speed limits are 10mph too slow, and now that everyone is used to speeding if we raise the limits to what they should be it’s gonna be a shitshow.

Not sure how many people know this but quotas are actually banned/ ~dont exist~ in RI Edit: banned but still exist

10

BlueSuitRiot t1_j9q6gth wrote

Quotas exist but aren't named quotas. Police leadership judges a cops performance by how many tickets/arrests/interactions they have. Police are incentivized to write tickets, make arrests, and do investigatory detainments. Ticketing and arrests don't stop bad driving and crime. Ticketing and arrests only lead to profit for the state. If cops aren't ticketing and arresting, they aren't being productive in the eyes of police leadership.

So is there a quota? No. But there are consequences for not generating revenue such as missed promotions and benefits of "high performers".

37

glennjersey t1_j9qfcug wrote

That's just a quota with extra steps.

9

BlueSuitRiot t1_j9qpiaj wrote

Cops call it "proactive policing." I interpret that as they're lazy and only reach for the low hanging fruit to pad numbers they use to ask for promotions and funding from the state. It's all about making money, either through fines, funding, and asset forfeiture. The top brass is incentivized to keep crime numbers high so that when they ask for money from the state for new guns or swat equipment they can point to crime statistics that they themselves control. Quotas are illegal but policing is done with ulterior motives. Keeping you, your family, and your stuff safe is not a concern for them unless it directly benefits them.

4

GhostOpera406 t1_j9qcv0j wrote

Imagine, instead, that we rewarded police officers for minimizing crime, minimizing arrests, and minimizing violence. If you can't do community policing, if you can't help people who are struggling, then don't be a cop, and maybe don't be a politician either.

3

SaltyNewEnglandCop t1_j9q7295 wrote

They sure are, but you said Exeter. Implying the Exeter PD was doing that, which is non existent.

If you meant the RISP, you would have said the State Police from the beginning, but you were wrong and now you’re trying to make it seem like you were right.

Exeter is possibly getting its own PD though, as it’s been entertained a few times during town council meetings. I hope they do.

−8

Affectionate_Till_62 t1_j9q7c6t wrote

No i was referring the Charlestown police and Exeters state police if your from ri you would know that

0

SaltyNewEnglandCop t1_j9q8l6l wrote

Ah yes, the Exeter State Police. Also known as the RISP.

The state PD that operate within the town of Exeter only do so for dispatched calls. So a B&E, assault, larceny, etc. if they’re not doing exactly that; they’re just normal state PD.

No RISP Trooper is assigned to operate for the town of Exeter like how the CT SP do with their town Troopers. So you’re just complaining about RISP being RISP, who are notorious for being heavy handed everywhere.

And the Charlestown issue was ‘16 or ‘17, not COVID.

−1

FlippyBee t1_j9qdhbc wrote

It was mentioned a few times by a retired cop who used to sit on the town council. Nobody else thinks this is a good idea. Crime is almost non-existent in Exeter. Why do you hope for this?

−1

SaltyNewEnglandCop t1_j9qdxg0 wrote

Because I’d rather have a consistent police force instead of whomever is working for the RISP. As they move to different barracks and are promoted, you’ll just get the latest group of fresh Troopers to replace them.

Where as with a local department, you’ll have consistency with its force. You’ll develop relationships and knowledge of the town and its people.

Like having your local beat cop who knows everyone and knows who does what.

And RI cops are so honest and upstanding that they require an archaic yet ironclad Officers Bill of Rights - you know, to make driving around and shooting at teenagers safe again.
