They lost a lawsuit, and basically have told the court to go fuck themselves because they didn't like the outcome.

Sounds about right.

I know the story. Even met the owner of the Tesla with the problematic plate. If you ask me there are a lot worse things that could be your license plate.

All I want is my vanity plates. This is getting out of hand.

Utah also suspended their vanity plates too because they were afraid of what people would request. It’s really stupid.

The other change I’d like to see Rhode Island make is allowing 7 characters. Their font would fit it.

Pathetic - I guess the state doesn’t need the revenue from vanity plates

Our DMV is pretty rogue. There's a similar issue with them refusing to issue plates for kei trucks. They don't have a legal basis, so they just refuse to do their job.

Pretty sure the guy said it was supposed to be fake gas, not fuck gas. Nobody uses fk as abbreviation for fuck, there's F, FU, Fck or F*ck. If a person wanted fuck gas it would probably be FUGAS, FGAS, EFFGAS.

I moved over 20 years ago. Lol.

However, I still have a bunch of family in New England so I’m up here a lot. However, it’s 70 and sunny today in NC so I can’t say the same for today but I do love New England. Lol

Yeah I know that if I moved back, I'd miss stuff here and want to return. I hope you get a bunch of special food while in RI; we have some great stuff up there. I actually really, really miss the Greek style pizza (house-of-pizza style)

I still don’t understand why we have people pearl clutching at license plates with profanity on them. How they hell does that affect one’s driving? It’s no different that having a decal that reads “fuck.”

Proof-Variation7005 t1_j9vxjk2 wrote

It's even less significant than that. That 2.4 million is probably from the time that vanity plates became available until now. A ProJo article said there's about 25,000 currently registered vanity plates right now, but they're only getting the $75-80 or whatever it is one single time per plate. Some of the active ones have been around for years, or decades even.

If I had to guess, I'd imagine that there's way less than 1,000 new ones issued in a normal year.

Desperate_Expert_952 t1_j9w7q19 wrote

They don’t want “FUCK” and “POOP” on a vanity plate. So they will have sour grapes and never approve any. 1st amendment and the court case have proved they need to approve “naughty” vanity plates.

Well if I can't swear in online gaming chats, then there are bots out there to scan for profanity. You have to upload your desired txt to the internet regardless, why can't they just put something like that on there?

I'm not computer genius, but doesn't seem like rocket science.

Why would you want a unique identifier which would make it much easier for someone to track/target your vehicle and by extension your home and yourself?

MomsOtherFavorite t1_j9wxx8e wrote

Not quite the same but when i moved back to RI in 2020 i requested a ‘specialty’ plate from the governors office. It was just my moms plate from like the 70s, 1 letter three numbers. Still haven’t heard from them.

They lost a lawsuit then cried about it. As if it’s even their mandate to regulate free vs offensive speech.

After reading this thread it’s shocking how many people fall into the following.

  1. Don’t like bad words on license plates.

  2. Hate free speech.

  3. Love the DMV and govt bureaucracy

D. All of the above. People give way too many ducks about what other people do that has zero bearing on their everyday lives.

My car already stands out. When I drive by, people notice my car. A license plate won't make a difference at this point.

I've heard it my whole life, these flashy cars make you stand out, why are you wasting money on your cars?

Plus a license plate is a unique identifier to every vehicle, whether it be vanity or not. No one else will have your same plate.

As far as I know they only redesigned the generic plates. But I will do my best to keep my green wave plate and not switch to the new style. If they have a new green wave I'll be all about it.

I like my green wave and don't want to give it up.

bouchard t1_j9yuu8c wrote

As of 1 Jan all new registrations, replacements for lost or damaged plates, and registration renewals will result in you receiving the new plate design. u/medicmechanist38 has also replied to my comment saying that the renewal plates already have the stickers attached to them.

The DMV doesn't want old plates turned in. I've had my plates since 1997 and there's actually some sentimental value, so I'm glad I can hold onto them.

3

Desperate_Expert_952 t1_j9z8isl wrote

Incorrect. States can no longer do that. It’s free speech. The Supreme Court has ruled on the matter. Having FKGAS or BOOB is now constitutionally protected speech. So instead of allowing DICK on a license plate they stopped issuing any vanity plates. My place “BALLZ” has been pending.

I don’t think it’s just a one time fee though. I got one 4 years ago without reading the fine print and a few months later my registration renewal came due and it was something like $100 more just because I had vanity plates. Changed them back to the normal plates so I didn’t have to pay the increased renewal fee.
